Forums - Sony Discussion - Shadow of the Colossus Confirmed as a Remake, Not a Remaster

During its E3 2017 press conference on Monday night, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the return of Shadow of the Colossus.

At the time of its announcement, it wasn’t quite clear whether the game was a remaster or remake; however, it has now been confirmed as the latter.

Speaking to FamitsuSony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida clarified that Shadow of the Colossus on PS4 is not a remaster but a remake. Further, while the content of the game will remain entirely the same, all of the assets are being remade.

Additionally, since the preferences of gamers in regards to controls and systems has changed since the game first hit on PS2, a modernized way to play will be implemented; however, this more up-to-date with current times style of play will be entirely optional, with the choice to play the game in its original style also remaining.

For those that don’t know: Shadow of the Colossus is an action-adventure game developed by SCE Japan Studio (and notably directed by the legendary Fumito Ueda) that released back in 2005 exclusively on the PlayStation 2.

Widely considered one of the greatest video games of all time, Shadow of the Colossus is often cited as a prominent example of video games as art. It notably won several awards the year of its release,  experienced strong sales, and developed a hardcore following that still raves about it to this day.

For those that don’t know: the game’s story focuses on a young man named Wander who enters a forbidden land. In the game, players will travel across a vast expanse on horseback and defeat sixteen massive beings know as colossi, in order to restore the life of a girl named Mono.

Shadow of the Colossus on PS4 is set to release sometime in 2018, presumably for $59.99 USD. Its development is being handled by Bluepoint Games, a team that handled the game’s remaster on PS3, as well as the remastering of the recent Gravity Rush and Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection.

Perfect way to handle it.

I expect I'll have to beat this a third time, such a good game.

So no 17th colossus? :(

It's one of my favorite games from last gen. If any game deserved a remake from last gen, it's shadow of the colossus.

This will be my third time buying it :)

The remade assets look great, but I do wish there were some new areas or mechanics — something like the Resident Evil remake in 2002.

Odin Sphere Leifthrasir does the exact same thing and it was a great decision.

Wasn't that already confirmed even looking at the trailer that it won't be just a small resolution upgrade?

The trailer looked extremely impressive.

Remakes > Remasters

You could tell there was more work done on it than just resolution & textures ect.
The animations looked much better, smoother and more natural.

^ this. You could tell it was a remake, and not just a port/remaster.
