Personally, I hope it is true. I think a market where it's just Nintendo focusing on handhelds/hybrids and Sony focusing on powerful home consoles is a bright future. They both offer unique enough of an experience and games for their customers.

You'd have to be ignorant to think a quasi-monopoly will be beneficial for the console business long-term.

Back when SNES and Genesis were basically the only two men in the ring, gaming was at it's finiest. We really don't need three consoles for innovation and quality.

If Sony can dual boot into Linux and still be considered a console why can't MS do the same with Windows?

You know why. You can't not know why those 2 things aren't equatable without needing to wear a helmet in the shower.

If the 360 didnt exist, many gamers would have no choice in buying a PS3 which would mean that the $800 price tag of the PS3 would have worked for Sony and that the PS4 would have continued the price hikes. Thanks to the 360 for putting Sony in there place last gen, we now have afforable next gen consoles. Dont assume Sony were going to lower the PS4 price based off no info. Sony was raising there prices on all the consoles every generation which means that the PS4 would have been the same until they started losing marketshare and customers. History proves this.

Did you know that the PS4 was rumoured to use 4gig of GDDR5 ram until leaks heard that the XB1 was going with 8gigs DDR3? If true than theres another benefit the Xbox did for Playstation.

Are you going to ignore all the things Sony took straight from the Xbox brand? Your going to act like we dont need Xbox?

Let me make a short list for you of the things that Sony took straight from MS/Xbox

PSN (Live)

Trophies (Achievements)

Home Button (Xbox 360 Controller)

Analog Triggers (Xbox 360 Controller)

Built in Harddrives (OXbox)

Built in Ethernet (OXbox)

Just naming afew things that help make Playstation better. Thats competition. Lets forget the things Sony took straight from Nintendo because that will require way took much time on my behalf.

You want competition or you will be taken advantage of.

A: In what, and how many regions was the PS3 $800?

B:Let us pray.

My apologise, i was talking Australia dollars, the PS3 was a $800 to $999 console here.

Plus the developers always have to compete.  It's not like Sony can just accept crap with no repercussions.  They will stay competitive due to pc and having to entice future console purchases rather than sticking to the old ones

Someone who gets it.  Sony isn't just going to have free reign, just because MS exits.  In fact, MS being in the market as introduced some pretty nasty things to it, and that's not even including the crap they tried to introduce this gen.  No, Sony will still have PC and Nintendo to compete against.  They price their console too expensive, and people will just get a Nintendo system or a PC.  And like you said, devs are always trying to up the ante to be the top dog in terms of graphics and gameplay.  So, it's not like their first parties will just give up and put out crap.  It also helps that the guy in charge of their WW Studios is an avid gamer, so he's not going to want his guys pumping out crap he can't stand to play.

Personally, I think Sony has seen what works very well this gen and is going to stick to it.  Offer a powerful console for $399.  And keep up the great 1st party support (they've always done this, though.)

They've also introduced some great things to it.

thismeintiel, I believe you and I have discussed this before in this thread here: http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=228020

So, is there a summary? I don't really want to watch a 30 minute video right now.

-Singplayer is a thing of the past

-lets make gaming like netflix, online only and watered down like watching TV

If that's a summary of the video; how does it tie in with the Scorpio being a mistake?

Sounds like he doesn't grasp that Microsoft is exiting the console business. It isn't a big mistake to scale back on operations that have no significant value for the company as a whole anymore.

Are they really exiting the console business, though? Why would they make the Scorpio if that were the case?

Xbox is and always has been a vanity project for MS. They are doing Scorpio simply because they were embarrassed that they launched a weaker more expensive machine against Sony.

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

Microsoft isn't holding any games against a paywall anymore.

Their games are plyable on pc with no cost for online on the best settings your pc can handle, the xbox is the biggest "optional" console ever there for people who apriciate the hardware and the effort microsoft puts in to that.

No real gamer would ever object to people getting an extra option to play games not held from the PC. That is rediculous. Nintendo and Sony games also coming to pc would not meen I wouldn't get a switch it would meen the switch is an option to play those games.

Microsoft nailed the value of games, they are software that shouldn't be exclusive to one platform. Get your mind togheter and be objective, sure, nintendo and sony are great but what microsoft and especially phil spencer has done is pretty remarkable from a consumer perspective and should be rewarded

TurboGrafx16 and NeoGeo.  While not major players like those other two, this still showcases competition was very much alive and well beyond Sega and Nintendo.

Those two consoles really weren't much competition worldwide. They were basically the Ngauge of the time.

Wake me up when Sony actually manages to release a good multiplayer for any of their titles.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

No.  Sony was already going with $399.  They didn't know what MS was doing until E3.  They were estatic that MS went $499 cause it meant they had the price advantage.  So, without MS, it would have still been $399.  And vast majority is definitely overstating it.  MS does not keep Sony in check.  The consumers do.  The drop from PS2 to PS3, mostly due to the high price, is what woke Sony up to having expensive custom HW isn't a good thing.

Intel Core i7 8700K | 32 GB DDR 4 PC 3200 | ROG STRIX Z370-F Gaming | RTX 3090 FE| Crappy Monitor| HTC Vive Pro :3

What do you think of the Atari box? If Xbox is gone as a video game manufacturer and become third party or stops existing, can Atari once again step up and start the console hardware business to make it a trioka again?
