Forums - Sony - PS4: 1 In 5 Sold Are PS4 Pros

20% of the entire sales rate is not exactly lighting records on fire either.

That would mean the sales for the week of 29th of April (As per VG Chartz.) would place it as 36,558 consoles shifted.

It is probably better than I expected though. And I wouldn't be surprised if Scorpio does worst than that.

Well, it's hitting nearly half of what the Xbox One is selling, which is impressive for what's supposed to be a premium option.

You're tight that it's better then expected.  Sony literally just said that.  They underestimated demand so much that they pulled advertising for the product because they didn't want to create anymore customers who'd be dissapointed and not able to purchase it.

20% of total PS4 sales, and supply-constrained, is undeniably good. Probably it could do 25%, more if they really underestimated its sales potential by a large margin.
The fact that base model sales are still strong, but that the Pro gives a significant boost too, means that PS4 could enjoy a very long and prosperous life.

Does anyone know how pro sales ratio compares to last gen divide between base and elite 360 models? Is it outpacing simple storage configurations?

The positive spin is just that, spin. Hopefully this teaches them and anyone else that's paying attention, that mid cycle upgrades are junk. These aren't cell phones. People do NOT feel the same way about game consoles. Full generational leaps from here on out.

PS4 Pro is selling more than they anticipated https://www.vg247.com/2017/02/03/ps4-pro-sales-are-stronger-than-that-of-ps4-slim-says-sony-cfo/,
So it looks like it's the other way around. This is something they'll likely go for again for PS5.

I don't believe PR people just because they say something.

Me neither, but in the same interview he said that PS4 Slim sales were performing below their expectations, which he certainly didn't need to reveal. So this was not one of those times where a PR person was just BSing to make things look better than they are.

And you sound like you belong to the group of people who had very unrealistic expectations of the Pro to begin with, which is why you inacurately interpret 1 out of 5 as bad. For all of us who said from the beginning that we expected 15-20% of the baseline sales to be Pro sales, there are no surprises.
Since Pro uses the same parts as a standard PS4, just more of them or upclocked, R&D funds were relatively minescule. Before Pro released they said that the group they aimed for were people who mid generation feel that consoles are getting outdated and instead start looking towards PC. Their aim was never as large as you presumed. And it didn't need to be. They have the base PS4 for that.

If you're going to sell something that only has 15% penetration, you might as well not do it. Clearly, this hasn't changed anything. There was no revolution. The majorty of gamers don't care about any of this... from any console maker. All it turned out to be was a ripple, not a wave which isn't what they were expecting. The entire goal was to create another launch-like craze... but that didn't happen. The majorty of people did not double dip and the new buyers don't even know they're getting a slightly better console. To them, it's just PS4.

I hope they (and anyone else paying attention) learned their lesson and stick with full upgrades from here on out. We don't need anymore modern 32X's and Sega CD's. It sucked then and it sucks now. Sorry if that seems overly cynical... but that's how I feel.

I disagree because if you sell a million PS4s, you'd rather sell 800K PS4s and 200K Pros than 1 million regular PS4s because the revenue you earn from the former scenario is greater. Also, of course the majority of gamers don't care about the Pro because the power enthusiast crowd is not the majority. Anyone who already acknowledged this fact when the Pro was revealed knew that the Pro would not constitute the majority of PS4 sales. However, considering, as Hiku said, the R&D was likely low due to hardware similarities and the price difference between the Pro and standard PS4 is significant, the Pro was a good move business-wise.

That said, I do have some complaints about Pro support, but that's another story.

Oh bullshit.  That was not the goal at all.  If it was, then all advertising would have been focused on Pro, instead of, you know, pratically none of it.  And the Pro has already outsold the 32X this year alone.  And its probably pretty damn close to outselling the Sega CD if you include last year's numbers.  And that's not much more than a half of a years worth of sales.  After a full year, it'll be well past both of them combined.  And it's yet to see a cut to $299, yet.  So, good luck continuing to hate a successful product.

Not to mention the dramatically fewer units they readied for Pro's launch compared to the millions for PS4's launch.

Exactly.  The Pro continues to go in and out of stock.  If they wanted it to be like a new launch, they would have had enough to continue to sell like a new system.
