Forums - Nintendo - 80+ Million Switches Need to be Sold in 5 Years or it's a Failure

No, its not point about one console, but about one platform, we could have Switch Mini/Pocket, Switch just for home console play, Switch Pro, Switch 2, Switch VR/AR addon.. Switch like hybrid console gave Nintendo lotsa opportunities for other iterations of hardware or addons, so there is no any reason to make separate platform with separate games and again divide their resources on two platforms.

I assume we will see Switch Mini/Pocket just for handheld play with price point of around $150-200 at end of 2018. or early 2019. and it will effectively replace curent 3DS price point on market.

You're assuming they meant one platform. The only thing they've really said before the Swtich was announced was that the next home console and handheld consoles "may have an integrated platform", and that future devices will have "a fair degree of technical integration". No where does this distincly mean that Nintendo intends on supporting one platform going forward, just that these platforms will share very similar technology. In fact, Iwata goes so far to demonstrate he does not mean one single platform in this quote

""If the transition of software from platform to platform can be made simpler, this will help solve the problem of game shortages in the launch periods of new platforms,""

I mean, I don't know about you, but that seem to me that the prime objective of the streamlining process was to make it far easier to support two platforms and port games between those platforms than to just support one platform in different form factors.

But that's just me though.

But fact that I mentioned also point on one unified platform (their talk about unified platform, fact they admit they can't any more support effectively two different platforms, fact they merge their handheld and home console hardware division, and handheld and home console software divisions..).

Only time will prove if I'm right, but I almost certain we will see Switch Mini/Pocket and we will not see another platform that will exist alongside Switch.

It depends on what Nintendo's expecting. If it doesn't meet their goals, then it's a failure.

Can you give me one quote where anyone talks about "one unified platform"?

I don't get this line of thinking that the NS must sell what the Wii U and 3DS sold combined to be considered a success. There most probably is a lot of overlap between the Wii U and 3DS userbases, it wouldn't surprise if almost everyone who owns a Wii U also has a 3DS. Anyway, for Nintendo, the NS will be a success as long as it makes good profit and in the end that what matters the most. And Nintendo's brand won't diminish because, aside from the NS, they are using other ways to increase the awareness of the Nintendo brand, like the mobile games (which will also help to increase the sales of the Switch and its games).

with the way Nintendo is still treating 3DS and the way they keep calling the Switch a "Home console", I have a feeling there is a chance they might have a 3DS successor coming up in the next 1-2years. It remains to be seen, but everything is possible at this point.

Predictions for LT console sales:

PS4: 120M

XB1: 70M

WiiU: 14M

3DS: 60M

Vita: 13M

Were people not allowed to buy both a 3ds and a wiiu?

They did differnt things.

The problem is that people think these are all seperate people.   If a person owned both a 3DS and a Wii U, you cannot expect that to equal 2 Switch sales.  Or maybe some of you do...

The contradiction here is (not talking about jrpgfan) that people say switch only being sold out by nintendo hardcore fans (excuse for why its doing well at least for now) but exclude these same fans that bought a wiiu but not a 3ds?

I don't think they said specifically "one unified platform", but this Iwata quote is definatly intresting:

"Apple is able to release smart devices with various form factors one after another because there is one way of programming adopted by all platforms. Apple has a common platform called iOS. Another example is Android. Though there are various models, Android does not face software shortages because there is one common way of programming on the Android platform that works with various models. The point is, Nintendo platforms should be like those two examples. Whether we will ultimately need just one device will be determined by what consumers demand in the future, and that is not something we know at the moment. However, we are hoping to change and correct the situation in which we develop games for different platforms individually and sometimes disappoint consumers with game shortages as we attempt to move from one platform to another, and we believe that we will be able to deliver tangible results in the future."

It's amazing how you keep using that quote but fail to realize that iOS/Android are operating systems that are on a variety of different devices where applications aren't necessarily cross compatible with one another. Not all iPad apps work on all iPhones. Not all Android tablet apps work on all android phones. There are actually seperate tiers of devices within both the iOS and Android ecosystems that do not share all of the same applications. Yet you still think this means that Nintendo is going to come out with mutliple different types of devices that all play the same game cartridges, when it isn't even true for the example you use.

You're just reading what you want to hear from that quote, and making assumptions from that. Nintendo has never said that the Switch is a handheld console as is meant as a successor to the 3DS. You just want that to be true.

Hell, I owned a WiiU and bought two 3DS handhelds (the first was sadly broken in an accident). When I only buy one Switch Nintendo will somehow lose 2 consumers.
