The pain au chocolat I've eaten have had pretty meh chocolate on the inside, the pastry at least adds something to it.
Good bread can be eaten alone, made it easy to hold while playing outside, plus the bar lasted much longer. Maybe it's nostalgia, since that taste is childhood for me.
