Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo killed handheld gaming

There will always be 'portable like' games with less content providing short gaming sessions, even if the hardware ain't pushed by them.

Just look what 'portable like' small games the PS4 has:

Inside, Shovel Knight, Rayman Legends, Fez, Bastion, Night in the Woods, Guacamelee, Zero Escape: The Nonary Games,  Towerfall Ascension, Puyo Puyo Tetris, Velocity 2X, Stardew Valley, OlliOlli 2, Resogun, Crypt of the NecroDancer, Super Meat Boy, Thumper, Lara Croft GO, Transistor, Jamestown+, Terraria, The Swapper, Danganronpa 1-2 Reload, Steins;Gate 0, SteamWorld Heist, N++, Child of Light, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, LocoRoco Releaded...

These small/short games are a good variety from the bigger games, not every game has to be a full-fledged experience.

I think there will still be a market for portable-type smaller games on Switch for a budget price. Though it might be more indie games that take that market rather than Nintendo IPs. But hopefully Nintendo still devotes some resources to smaller "portable" games.

Though I do think if the 3DS gets continued software support for a while and Nintendo drops the new 2DS price down to $100 with a game, or less, then the 2DS could continue to sell as the standard portable small game type system, picking up lots of new sales from kids, and then the Switch will have some of those types of games but won't fully get into that market until the 3DS totally dies off.

Most indies are pretty pick up and go. Even if most devs focus on full fledged experiences, indies will give the Switch just as much "handheld" caliber games that are great on the go.

I think there'll still be a small market for the type of port able games that thrived in the past - but at a $100 or lower pricepoint. For most of the market, a $200 Switch Mini will fill the "portable" slot entirely in a few years.

I wouldn't call Inside a handheld type game. Playing that on the go would be like watching a movie on a smartphone in short bursts. It would be...unjust.

Besides that, I agree. Portable type games aren't going anywhere. They won't be costing $60 though.

I stopped reading at Pokemon MMO. Please go drink some chloroform.

Agree, Nintendo with Switch blurs the line between handheld and home console gaming.

Instead of the Switch, could of just updated the 3DS with a 720p screen.

Hmh. I never thought about it this way. That is kinda sad. 3DS had small masterpieces like 3D Land and Link Between Worlds which were more handheld suitable but in many ways better than home console experiences.

Dude, have you hear of indie games?

There will always be a place for smaller games. You just won't have to pay Nintendo 40 or 50$ for them, that's all.
