Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Is Nintendo management letting them down?

Nintendo immediately follows the HUGE launch success of their flagship platform with...

A couple questionable business decisions:(

1) A new 2DS???

Reggie just made a statement (probably cuz shareholders are like What is going on??)

     http://www.vgchartz.com/article/268052/reggie-explains-why-the-new-2ds-xl-exists/

In said statement he says 3DS outsells 2DS 9:1 and the reason is cuz people like the 3d function. So they make a clamshell 2DS?? That doesn't address the issue!

2) Nintendo discontinues the NES classic

This is a real head scratcher now. At first it was understandable if they needed to put all that production power into the Switch. But then they turn around and put it into the 2DS!?!?

WHY DIDN'T YOU JUST KEEP MAKING THE NES CLASSIC.

Consumers are absolutely chomping at the bit to get it still. It would have sold MILLIONS more easily.

Conclusion:

Sometimes I think that the shot-callers at Nintendo need to be TURNED OUT. The game designers, engineers, and shareholders deserve better. If the production lines aren't an issue (as seen by the production going into the New 2DS) listen to your customers, double down on classic systems and sell compilation mini cartridges for NES and SNES mini consoles. You'd be surprised when that is a huge success. Now that the Switch is set in motion the Nintendo Game Machine par excellence will turn it into the next Wii as long as the bumbling Nintendo management doesn't waste their time with rediculous side projects.

Just to let you know Nintendo is not a Japanese company. It's a Kyoto based company. Their structure is vastly different from others in Japan, let alone the world. From a business point of view they are doing things that fans won't understand and fans don't need to. I read it somewhere about their culture. Lots of things play when making a decision.

Wait a minute, the New 2DS XL wasn't a good business decision...? How does something that obviously going to sell decently well, make a good amount of money and send the 3DS well over the 70 million mark a 'questionable' business decision? I thought it was a pretty obvious decision that has been proven successful many times especially with Nintendo.

Besides the only problem with the original 2DS wasn't the lack of 3D, it was the lack of a clamshell design.

I'm confused by your first two-sentences, as Kyoto is in Japan, unless we're only counting the Tokyo region as culturally/economically importatnt to Japan. Kyoto is a big city too, though, so it's not as if it's a world of difference from Tokyo.

In regards to the OP, I don't entirely know what the rationale is for the New 2DS XL, but I guess they saw a market for it. The NES Classic I can understand as to why they discontinued it, because it was mainly support to be a console to fill the gap between the holidays and the Switch. The supply issues on the other hand, I do not understand why they had that problem. Nintendo are obviously in a very safe spot financially, so they they're probably not doing too much to dissatisfy their shareholders.

1) This is not a bad decision, I don't even view it as questionable.  The PSone, the final version of the SP, the Micro, the Xbox 360 E, the PS3 Super Slim.  This is the same as all of those, a final revision to grab the last of the sales for the prior generation.  And with the hardware now being sold at profit, there's no reason not to do this.  And actually the slate design of the 2DS was a major issue with most of the older market.  So no, the N2DSXL is not a nonsense move, it is a tried and tested move the is worth it nearly every single time it is done.

2) It is understandable to criticize that, but to imply they should have canceled the N2DSXL plans to continue the NES demonstrates a plain lack of understanding of the money to be made.  NES probably makes $25 when you subtract the shipping, retailer's cut, etc.  But Nintendo doesn't get all of that, those Capcom and Konami games on the system are not free, those companies get a royalty I assure you.  So I would dare say the NES makes less per unity sold than the N2DSXL will likely make.  And more importantly, you can't buy more games for the NES.  As such, the N2DSXL is incontravertably a more profitable option than continuing the NES.  The only rational way to continue the NES would have been to up their budget for manufacturing and put those resources towards the NES.  Since they have already upped spending to keep the Switch in stock, they probably just didn't feel the need to up their spending again to sustain production of the least lucrative of their hardware options.

He's probably referring to the Kyoto management style.  It's different from standard Japanese.

In what way?

The 2DS is a good idea. For consumers, it's another entry point into what management feels is a very robust and valuable game library. 2016 showed that generating interest in the 3DS was really good for the sales of evergreen games. They had a slide about this in their presentation to investors.

The 3DS family can continue to do this into 2017 and the New 2DS XL is part of that strategy.

As for the NES Classic, who knows why they discontinued it. There are a ton of theories that make sense though. The most likely being that they probably don't make a whole lot of money off of it after manufacturing costs and licensing costs.

Please stop with the bitching about the NES classic. There are several reasons as to why they would stop the production of it.

The new 2DS looks great. I want one and I already have a 3DS XL.

Let them down? I think you've got that part mistaken as since Pokemon Go their management have the company flying.
