Exactly, the plastic was chosen because they wanted shatter proof but didn't want to go with the much more expensive shatter resistant glass, which would have been scratch resistant as well but also significantly more costly.
A propper dock used as instructed should not result in any appreciable damage to the screen. However, impropper use or a defect on the dock rails could make this possible. I do, I think, have a very, very mild scratch. It's invisible to the naked eye unless held at a specific angle under a light source and can't be felt by touch. But it is there and I think it happened when I undocked it in a slight hurry. However, if a bump was on the rail - this being a manufacturing defect - the odds could be much higher and potential scratches worse. However, worth noting is that this is precisely the reason the Switch has that black trim around the actual screen part of the "screen". Any potential damage, however unlikely, to be had from docking would occurr there, away from the actual display.
As for how I like my Switch, I think it's great. Good build quality, nice display, portability works great, the transition from handheld mode to home console mode is seamless and brilliantly done, and the Joy-Con are a great controller solution and provide a good controller out of the box in all configurations. Even got use out of the table-top mode two player splitscreen with the Joy-Con acting as individual controllers, though there's a limit to what you can comfortably do there.
For games, I have Zelda which is fantastic, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe which is great, FAST RMX which is really good, Blaster Master Zero which is really good (and a good deal), Wonder Boy and the Dragon Trap which I enjoyed, and Snake Pass which is a very unique experience. I like all of these games, but I most recommend the first four and definitely the first 3.
