Forums - Gaming - Current Game Plans of the Console Makers

Who has the best plan at the moment

Nintendo 43 44.33%

Sony 48 49.48%

Microsoft 6 6.19%

Total:97

So with Microsoft's recent comment about sticking to multi player focused games, I suppose it warrants a question for what the console makers have as their game plans and which is smartest.

Microsoft is focusing on power and multiplayers, Nintendo is focusing on trying to create a solid Switch lineup with strong momentum for first year to recover faith....Sony is as far as I can tell working to continue its dominence.

Am I wrong, and who has the best plan?

The Democratic Nintendo fan....is that a paradox? I'm fond of one of the more conservative companies in the industry, but I vote Liberally and view myself that way 90% of the time?

None have the best plan. They all have their strengths and weaknesses and appeal to different demographics.

If you were to only count sales, then Sony has the generation in the bag, unless Switch closes a 60~ million gap before generations end.

It is hard to say. All three of them look to have solid platforms in place.

Microsoft is basically turning Xbox into a highly optimized and easy to use Windows on TV experience. I like the idea of moving away from static generations. Bringing all Windows Apps to Xbox will greatly increase its value, and open it up to a massive audience. Then add on the ability to play Xbox games on any windows platform going forward, and I think they have put the Xbox in a solid position, where it will continue to be part of the Windows ecosystem for a very long time.

Sony is on the right path with so far. Moving into VR early is great, they have failed to move on new tech in music, music players, and TVs in the past, so it is nice to see them jumping on new gaming tech at the very begining. Again, I like the idea of moving away from static generations, no reason to hold people hostage on tech for 5 - 10 years, when free upgrades become available at every fab shrink. The expansion to TV and Music streaming gives them a bit of broader appeal, but they still need to do more. PlayStation is in the best position right now, but it all depends on Sony embracing it, and being willing to build the rest of its divisions up by unifing behind the PlayStation OS, PlayStation Network, and PlayStation Store.

Nintendo is is a great position with the Switch. Being built on standard mobile hardware they can easily reduce costs, and release revisions every year. By moving to a single unified platform, they will be able to deliver more titles, and higher quality titles going forward. They have a huge oppertunity going forward to bring massive growth to their company. Now they just need to capitalize.

I prefer the Hardware/Value and general Direction of Xbox most. I am a PC gamer above all and being able to buy a game once and play it on my console, which I can carry to friends and to night-shifts and when I am living in my military barracks at times is the best deal ever created.

I will always pick Nintendo over Xbox because they generally make better games and I think the switch has potential as a handheld so I voted that. I don't have a switch yet but when they release a smaller version with no docking station (which I feel like they will) it is going to be a great device for me and if they don't I will wait for the price to drop under 300 and the games to arrive, which should be between now and 2 years.

Personally I preferred PS4 for a long time but the Pro and the VR and Vita/PSTV have all been something I personally think sony didn't deliver what I wanted as a consumer so thats why I voted nintendo and would have votes xbox over them.

Nintendo easily.

I like Sony's projected path but a lot of their decisions hinge on moneyhatting third party devs on key games.... too weak on first party for me to give them THAT much credit, particularly when the PS4 and Xone are fairly similar platform wise and they killed off their handheld division essentially. Only Sony 1st Party game I'm mega curious about at the moment is the upcoming God of War and possibly that one they haven't talked about for a while (was it Dreams? or something whimsical like that?)

Each of them seem to be getting back on track after recent (sometimes monumental) blunders. I mostly like where each of them are heading atm. I'd say Sony seems to have the best game plan going forward simply because its success is already being proven and most of what they have to do now is keep it going and not fuck it up.

Company wise Sony sell a shit ton of hardware and make abd move games. That is the primary focus of playstation I love, I take a huge library of good singleplayer games and decent hardware over portability and better MP support.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

I am a traditional gamer, so I prefer when a console maker acts like one (again...traditionally). This also means, I like when a console maker makes their own games that makes them stand out. Third party can be found anywhere, so make yourself special. Microsoft is the least special, with the most extra parts. What I mean by this is they fail to deliver first party, but are great at distracting the consumerbase with things that don't matter. If they are going to do online, then so be it. I am also glad that spencer conceded that Sony and Nintendo pretty much are untouchable when it comes to sales with single player games. Either they need to get good or shut up. They could have great single player if they just worked at it. They have the money to pay for the best developers and yet they act like they don't have a creative bone in their body in making games that attract diverse audiences. Microsoft hooked me on the 360 by using exclusives that came from PC devs, but in the end....all that did was make me want to build a PC. I should get on with playing State of Decay so I can understand why people say its a strong franchise. They also need to make crackdown 1 & 2 bc.

Sony is dominating this gen for the same reason they've dominated other gens. They have exclusives from all parties and regions that cannot be touched anywhere but on a PS3 or PS4. Same with Nintendo, but they have found a genius way to circumvent the competiton.

Meanwhile, Microsoft will drop what they drop, but they will be heavily third party dependent (as usual).  It doesnt help them to get their first party from third party and it will get worse as the years in the gen go by.

My guesses

Nintendo is going in the direction of adopting the switch as their new standard of consoles. At the moment they're targeting their adult core fanbase. In 2018 they'll start to go after a younger audience.

Sony will continue to use exclusivity to make their console more attractive than Xb1 and PC. At the same time, the main risk I can see from their point of view, is that the Ps4 is doing almost too well and it may market saturation too early. If that happens they may not be able to release a substantial upgrade over the current Ps4 and they could risk to lose some marketshares. For this reason I belive in, the next couple of years they will put a lot of effort to push VR forward and be the first company to succed in that market.

As for MS honestly I can't tell atm.

MS : Single player games dont have impact anymore, everything will be Games as a service (multiplayer online). Keep em playing same game forever, bombard them with micro-transactions  ($_$)/

Nintendo : Local Co-OP bishes! And mostly single player focused content.

Sony : We ll give you those experiances that 3rd parties dont, the big single player experiances. If you want a online multiplayer shooter, go buy CoD ect.
