Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo "will not be hosting a large-scale press conference" at E3

Big missed opportunity as usual

Yep. It's a good time to market Nintendo's products especially when so many gamers watch it.

Around the Network

They don't need a big event to announce the new Pokemon for the Switch, it'll sell gangbusters anyway.

"What? You're saying we could get people excited with a big conference, get big media coverage, and move a lot of consoles as a result? No thanks..."

They should just all switch to wearing dresses already. I want the old Yamauchi "attitude era" Nintendo back.

With the internet being what it is today, is there a difference between a big conference a majority of people won't be able to watch in person and watching a digital event/direct in terms of coverage?

Around the Network

They didnt had "a large-scale press conference" like 4-5 years now.

That's fine as long as there is a Direct. I like the Treehouse stuff, but it felt a bit empty last year without a Direct.

Well last year felt little empty only because Nintendo mainly had "one game focus E3".

Regardless to people's personal opinions on what format makes for better viewing, i think this is a missed opportunity. A big E3 presentation in the style of Sony's last one (effectively just a massive gameplay real with a bit of crowd hyping added in) could generate a lot of buzz for Nintendo. Them having a presentation at all would pull in a lot of interest, given how long it's been since their last.

Personally I think no. The scripted Direct E3 events have been much better than stage events. As long as they have Mario Odyessy, Splatoon 2, Xenoblade 2, etc. there they will have a great show. I find sitting through Sony and MS' briefings to be a chore these days actually. Dull and lots of dead space.

Scripted/pre-recorded keeps everything moving at a snappy pace without listening to person XYZ introduce themselves and blah, blah, blah, just shut up already and show your game, blah, blah, etc.

I agree, but Nintendo could at least try to get some hype going for their games. I like Directs, but its not very exciting to see two old men in a yarn shop talking about their game...

Less about that and more of the casual person noticing a lack of Nintendo's presence, again

Nintendo made huge hype last year at E3, basically won E3 with single game.

At end, only difference between "large-scale press conference" and Nintendo Digital Event, is live reactions of people who are present on those "large-scale press conferences". Both are streaming online and of course huge majority of people are watching them online.

So no, Nintendo doesnt need "large-scale press conference", for instance Nintendo E3 2014. was one of best Nintendo E3 ever, so what they need are good and strong announcements, for instance their E3 2015. was bad because of that.

Yes, they need to have good games, but they could hype them a bit more. Not just:

"Take a look at this"

*Trailer plays*

"What did you think?"

*10 minutes of people talking about the game*

"Now take a look at this"

Feels more like Im watching something made for old people to make sure they follow whats going on...

Their digital showcases have proved to be better than live conferences.
