That different market thing is B$, they are both gaming machines, and they are both competing for the same thing.

The wii's main advantage and I think only andvantage over the PS3 is its very cheap price.

So I'm thinking, things certainly are on the upswing for the PS3 in 2008.  Sales are picking up with big software on the way, like MGS4/FFXIII/Home?LBP etc. .  So maybe they catch 360 by the end of 2009/early 2010, to be optimistic.

My question is, how much do they have to "win" by in this gen to actually "win"?  Because no matter what happens, they will have lost a signifcant amount of market share this generation when compared to the last.  18 months in, the decade-old PS2 is still outselling it, or at least keeping pace.  And they aren't exactly moving software off the shelves with the notable exception of COD4 and GT5:Prologue.

I see a lot of optimism here for PS3 and I have a lot myself.  But I'm not sure why when I really break down the numbers.  Will they make money?  Yes.  Will they end up passing 360 worldwide?  Likely.

Okay firstly saying home and LBP are big software is a bit of a stretch. So far my non gamer friends aren't even aware these exist. Im fairly convinced LBP is going to turn out to be like Locoroco. By the buzz on the net you expect it to be amazing then it turns out really outside the internet no one gives a damn. Home I can see going either way, it could be really big or a huge failure.

It's a strange thing. I can imagine every single sony fanboy making a post of orgasmic glee when the PS3 total sales exceed the 360 sales. And yet if you had said 3 years ago, that the ps3 would be battling with the 360 for second place fanboys would have thrown a hissy fit.

I think really this generation will be considered a pretty hefty 'loss' for Sony. If the PS3 sold 60million and the 360 sold 35million I would consider that a pretty impressive success for MS and a pretty massive failure for Sony. I mean the PS2 had 115million? 120million? and the xbox had 24million. If sony lose 60million console sales, well that's certainly not good.

I mean it would be extremely hard for Sony to maintain a 100million+ userbase but I don't think it was unreasonable for them to get 90million or so. So yea I would call the PS3 a massive mistake. Should have made it cheaper, easier to develop for etc.
I think Sony will end up being second this generation but Nintendo and MS are definetly going to make far more progress.

I do wonder sometimes though if MS had managed to avoid the 3red lights fiasco if they could have really pushed the PS3 into 3rd place. That was definetly a huge screw up by MS.

Oh and I hate people that claim the PS3 is in the HD market so will win it's market and the wii doesn't count. People that buy Wii's are less likely to buy another console. It would be like claiming the N64 won it's generation as it was competing in the cartridge based games market.

Turkish says and I'm allowed to quote that: Uncharted 3 and God Of War 3 look better than Unreal Engine 4 games will or the tech demo does. Also the Naughty Dog PS3 ENGINE PLAYS better than the UE4 ENGINE.

How Sony "wins" in their own eyes, in one simple step:

(1)The PS3 turns a profit. The larger, the more they win

Simple.

I hardly doubt sony is interested in beating user base of each console. A business cares more about making money. They set themselves up for the future to make more money. I think it's a win for them.

The main goal of any company is to beat teh competition.  Of course, they are more interested in making money, but come on--do you think Nintendo was overly happy with how the N64 and GameCube were tidily trounced by Sony, even though they still made a healthy profit?

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

I think all three companies will declare themselves 'winners' of some form. Clearly, Nintendo will be the only one to be highly profitable though and almost certainly the top selling console.

Sony will learn lessons from this generation and play much smarter next time around. They may not make any profit, but they won the format war, will most likely beat MS and will still be a major player.

MS will not quit, unless another major player steps in. If Apple of such were to throw it's hat into the ring, the chances of MS ever making financial gains off gaming become vertually nil. It'd just be too competitive unless they totally change their gameplan. Otherwise, MS will trumpet their gains this gen and aim to be a much more accesible to everyone system next gen.

At this point I don't think the PS3 has any chance at passing the Wii, it will get 2nd though.

Nintendo still doomed?

Actually, the point is to *maximize* profit. So if Nintendo makes more money this gen than Sony, then from Sony's point of view they should've been able to make as much themselves if they'd done things differently and therefore wouldn't have been as successful as they could've been.

good topic but it could be answered in the wrong way.
Has sony won in terms of shifting market share when compared to last generation with the PS2... NO
But they couldn't possibly have expected to.
They were very smart IMO. leaving the PS2 to in some ways compete with the wii on the lower price end was genius. But the wii is better than the PS2 in almost every way.

Then they had even more direct competition with the 360, since their main console, the PS3 was 1/2 of the HD market.

I think with everything considered, the later launch, $600 launch price.... it is a win for Sony. They upheld their image as the greatest technology out there (or even strengthened it) and most importantly of all Sony introduced Blu-Ray and won only because of the PS3.

They will eventually be #1 in the HD market, and are competing in all fronts with the PS2 and PSP.

Lets face it, the stars really aligned for the PS2. The original XBOX was not great IMO. It was microsofts first attempt, and was late to the market just like the GC. Both of which couldn't survive it.

So I guess what I am saying is if the PS3 was introduced when the 360 was, at the 360's price point. (and the 360 and wii were introduced later) then the PS3 would have again dominated this generation just like it did the last.
But that is pretty much a given... right?

But if that was the case then blu-ray would not have had time to be implemented and sony would not have won the HD format war.

So..... siggghhhhh... not everything could be done like it was last gen since sony was reaching for a lot more.
