Forums - Nintendo - The Joy Cons cost about $90 to make!

1. If that's true then that is nothing short of laughable.

2. English cannot be the first language of the person that wrote that article.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

I dont really think they cost THAT much.As someone said in another thread, these estimates are usually on the higher end, and Nintendo could certainly offset some of the costs due to sheer shipment unit requested(the more you order to manufacture, the less each unit costs to make).Having said that, I dont think Nintendo is making any money off of them.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

They should have dumped HD Rumble. Unnecessary expense.

Maybe to you, I feel like they have tons of potential.

First of all I don't see how these controllers could cost anywhere near that much. Maybe they do cost a lot for some reason that I can't fathom which is why the retail for a lot, but Nintendo is definitely making a profit selling them separately, there's no way they cost $90 to make.

Secondly, this thread has devolved into "hey they should make the switch another failure like the Wii U". Seriously people, you want Nintendo to take out all of the things that make the Switch marketable?!?! And have to increase costs by producing multiple version of the same system, each version much less marketable than what they currently have. Not to mention if you did some of these things you'd have to take out motion control and hd rumble which would mean you are changing the communication between user and system (inputs/outputs) for some versions of the system which means games that rely on those things would no longer be playable with all versions. So you'd have a very confusing group of Switch products for consumers to try to figure out and then even worse you'd split up the software available. Your suggestions are the absolute worst thing Nintendo could do. All because maybe the controllers cost a lot to make?!!

Get real people.

That price seems improbable to me :/

It's not about you or me; HD Rumble is simply not a big system seller, they would have been better off dumping it to either sell the system for less and hence sell more, or make more money per unit sold.

They made mistakes defining costs. If it was $90 for a pair of joycons, then the retail price would be more to buy separate.

Doubt it.

Remove the Joycons, the dock, the screen and give me a little box that plugs into my TV.

Call it the "Stay With It Together Its Home" and sold!

You forgot removing the battery. ;)

Yeah, a not portable version with the same performance and the pro controller should be even cheaper to make.

  • normal Switch (portable + docking station + joy-cons) = $299
  • handheld Switch (portable + connectable to TV with HDMI... similar to the later PSP models) = $199
  • home Switch (little box with power supply + HDMI cable + Pro controller) = $199

This way home console fans who don't need the portable option and handheld fans who don't need the docking comfort + rumble effects wouldn't have to pay for features they don't need.

Second variation doesn't make sense, because that's basically Switch, but totally make sense to have smaller Switch just for handheld playing, so basically what you wrote but without connection to TV.

Hardly Nintendo should sell them two for $80 if they dont have any profit, that's accessory and console companies best profit usually have on accessories.
