Their last 4 games released about 3 years apart from one another and were all from existing franchises.

Probably something unambitious that any other Nintendo studio could have done, like Diddy Kong Racing 2 or Jungle Beat 2.
Nintendo's handling of Retro over this past generation has been terrible. The whole reason they were originally acquired back in the day was to make the kind of more adult-oriented content that EAD wasn't willing to do. Having them work on the same kind of games as EAD is a waste of their talent.

DKC returns was announced 5 months before launch and Tropical Freeze was announced 5 months before the original launch date (was delayed by 3 months but thats still only 8 months between reveal & release).
