| Shadow1980 said: "The ability to re-download purchased content will also stop at some point; we will announce specific details as that time approaches." — Nintendo It hasn't happened yet, but it will, and when it does we'll be at two platforms that have abandoned their digital stores entirely. First was the original Xbox. Now it's the DSi. The 360, Wii, and PS3 will probably follow suit within the next five years. No platform will be supported forever. This is exactly the thing I was talking about in other threads in regards to digital on consoles. If anything happens to your digital downloads once the platform is no longer supported, that's it. They're gone forever. That happened to me after the MS dropped support for XBL for the original Xbox. Fortunately it was only $21 of DLC, and there was still a physical option. But I shudder to think about the possibility of an entire library of games at risk of being lost forever. At least with physical there's a second-hand market, and all those copies that were sold can still, at least in principle, be found and bought (some especially rare games may be tough to find and quite expensive). There's still a vibrant second-hand market with older consoles that have long since been abandoned by their parent company. That wouldn't be possible with a digital-only console. If consoles ever do go digital-only, then I'm done supporting the game industry. I'll stick with my older systems. To me, the very real benefits of having a physical copy that you own outweigh the supposed benefits of digital, and that's important enough to me to where my support of the industry is 100% contingent on physical media being available. |
But even older systems will stop working someday.
God bless You.

With a little bit of electrical know-how, you can restore any console from the past, easily. With advanced knowledge, you can build your own replacement parts. You won't be able to bring an entire digital storefront back online though, under any reasonable circumstance

People out there make sure to figure out ways to repair, or salvage the hardware aspect of consoles. For example: The electrolyic caps in a N64. Can be replaced, with surface mounted ones. That don't use liquid. So zero chance of them failing. And eating away the board. Some of the CD base consoles. You can buy laser replacements. The NES HDMI mod, moved the power controls, to the mod board. So your NES is now less stressed, and cooler.

Good points.
I'm buying everything digital for Wii U. It's my first experience. So far, it's ok since I don't see myself playing those games again.
I believe that some stuff is ok to buy digital, others is better to buy physical. Sometimes digital content is ridiculously cheap, I just can't help buying them.
On PC, digital stuff is going on for years and it's working out. Perhaps in a few years, consoles will provide a more reliable digital experience.
God bless You.

It works for you. Since you just play a game once, and that's it. I still pop in my copy of Goof Troop on SNES. I have that ability, because I have control. And I don't like rebuying games over and over again.

In addition to what others said, there are plenty of second-hand systems out there. You don't have to look far to find an old NES or SNES to buy. Popular systems still have tens of millions of units out there in circulation, and those old cartridge-based systems last for a good while since there's fewer moving parts. Also, patents do expire, and when that happens hardware clones won't be too far behind. So far, there have been hardware clones of most notable systems up through the 16-bit era, and with this new Retro Blox modular system, we'll be seeing everything up through the PS1. The N64 won't be too far behind.
The reason digital worked so well for PC was that A) the first-sale doctrine never applied to PC software, so there was never really a huge second-hand market, and B) PC is an open platform, so there's always room for multiple competitors, and if one digital storefront goes under, another can easily fill its place, which will never be the case for a closed platform like a console. |
Makes sense.
Downloading digital content is really comfy, but you really fell like you don't own anything. :/
I've bought a few albums from Apple Music. I hope I don't regret that in 20 years. :)
God bless You.
