In addition to what others said, there are plenty of second-hand systems out there. You don't have to look far to find an old NES or SNES to buy. Popular systems still have tens of millions of units out there in circulation, and those old cartridge-based systems last for a good while since there's fewer moving parts. Also, patents do expire, and when that happens hardware clones won't be too far behind. So far, there have been hardware clones of most notable systems up through the 16-bit era, and with this new Retro Blox modular system, we'll be seeing everything up through the PS1. The N64 won't be too far behind.
The reason digital worked so well for PC was that A) the first-sale doctrine never applied to PC software, so there was never really a huge second-hand market, and B) PC is an open platform, so there's always room for multiple competitors, and if one digital storefront goes under, another can easily fill its place, which will never be the case for a closed platform like a console. |
Makes sense.
Downloading digital content is really comfy, but you really fell like you don't own anything. :/
I've bought a few albums from Apple Music. I hope I don't regret that in 20 years. :)
God bless You.
