Forums - Gaming - How the heck did Sony manage to retake the console market again?

You are clearly just missing my point here and focus on your rent about Microsoft's "less powerfull hardware". Point is price. One was lower than the other and general consumer does not care about your "less powerfull processing hardware (add whatever you need to feel even better) than the Play Station Four" thing.

Price matters... Xbox One was more expensive and both hardware could play the same game. For the consumer (not the fan boys, or Microsoft / Sony enthusiast etc...), the choice is very simple; you go for the 100$ less... Why on earth would you not...

Do you think Microsoft was justified in charging $500 USD at launch with hardware (Kinect) bundled with ALL units and with that unit produced graphical quality less than the competition?

Are you really going to continue with your non-sense? Who said Microsoft price was justified or not? The thread is about WHY the Play Station Four took the market not about how you think Microsoft should have priced their hardware.

They learned from their mistakes and chose to hear the voice of developers, both Japanese and Western, on what they wanted in the PS4.

The simple answer is that they made a strong, affordable, aesthetically pleasing console, that did things which people understood.

well i dont buy anything sony for past decade due to personal reasons. but they made a powerful-ish SYSTEM and nintendo who used to dominate became nokia and let sony have it by giving games what they THINK they want. not what they actually want!!!

So good job for sony. i think nintendo will never recover if the switch doesn't hit 50mil. which i think it will hit 20 only this 5 year cycle.

So i think nintendo dropping the ball and sony sticking to the old basic formula of power and same controllers since 90s worked.

I feel like Sony was already regaining confidence near the mid way mark of the PS3's life. They managed to turn around a near disaster and delivery some solid titles. First few years of PS3 were terrible though.

I feel the same way, people make it sound like PS3 was a disaster from start to finish ,when in fact it was pretty much resolved by the t first slim edition onwards.

Especially this. PS3 wasn't extraordinary unpopular and PS4 isn't extraordinary popular. PS4 is just selling better because the concurrention is a lot weaker.

Concurrention?

do you mean competition?

Don't try to fix it ,we need to start using the word as much as we can and context be damned , we could be part in shaping 2017's word of the year Concurrention.

I see it now we give you 2017 word of the year  Concurrention  it means to  concur concurrently or in laymans term to reach agreement  at the same time.

Exclusives drove a lot of it IMO.

MS gave up on exclusives.

PC only has 10 AA or AAA exclusives rated at 80% or above from 2014 to 2017.
PS4 has 19 AA or AAA exclusives rated at 80% or above from 2014 to 2017.

Like people have said in other threads, the PS4 is just killing it when it comes to exclusives.

Incoming "exclusives don't matter" replies, primarily from PC and Xbox gamers.

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

Good marketing, good price and MS and Nintendo helping then

To the thread premise: because the "disaster" of PS3 still resulted in outselling Xbox for the generation, despite 1 year delay.
That is just how much stronger the PS brand is on a worldwide basis, so the outcome of this gen is ABSOLUTELY NO SURPRISE.

When it comes to home consoles Playstation has always been a very popular brand, and they may have done a lot of mistakes with the PS3 but they learned from those mistakes and made a lot of efforts in gaining consumer trust that generation which keept going into the PS4 gen.

Not to mention ive always belived (and still do) that PS getting big exclusives of both western and japanese titles along with making tons of new IPs every gen of all sorts of genres really helps them have a lot of diversity in their game lineup, that translates into a lot of sales world wide since the platform ends up appealing to all sorts of people.
