Forums - Sony - What if the PS4k wasn't the Pro, and is still in development?

lol the PS4k is such a catchy name that it's surprising they didn't go with it (and might feel tempted to make a true 4k PS4)... but I really don't think there's room for another upgrade before their next jump to the PS5.

Of course, the whole "generation" concept has been entirely abandoned by Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo at this point, so we might see less concern about it. The PlayStation's tradition of simply naming itself PS/PS2/PS3/PS4 sort of demands some generational designation, but if they leave that naming convention behind then these sort of constant upgrades may become even more routine.

Sony needs to be able to compete with Scorpio and the PS4K is the only way. Unless Scorpio is only a slightly faster copy of the PS4 Pro without a dedicated GPU.

Yes competing with yourself with so much hardware worked so well for SEGA. Stupid if they did that. Already silly with Vita,PSVR,PS4,PS4 Pro,PS4 slim and in some parts PS3 still. Also what killed Apple until Jobs skimmed it back down in 97.

How can you compete with yourself when its all in the same platform/ecosystem. These are all PS4s here, different spcs and different prices for different customers but they all play the exact same games.

To OP.

well, firstly the leaked specs of the PS4k turned out being a literal copy and paste of the final specs of the PS4pro. So theres that. And like Pemalite said, PSUs don't only account for the CPU and GPU. They account for everything else that the unit powers including USB ports providing power to other devices and then some headway for inefficiencies.

Oh, not a chance PS5 is coming out next year.

There is no sense in making 3-4 or more SKU's for a single home console with different chipsets, it makes for a huge headache both for consumers and developers and it makes pricing a dubious affair at best.

Reminds me a lot of the Steambox scenario, too many choices for hardware can put off some people and confuse others. If it was defintiely going that way, I wouldn't feel the need to bother with anything outside of building my own setup every 4-5 years.

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

Yeah, it's also another step away from the console world's supposed main motto; "simple gaming", or at least more simple than PC. PC gaming is becoming more streamlined while console gaming is becoming more finicky and bombarded with forced updates, patches, paid services and useless companion apps and DLC.

Exactly, and it's one of the reasons why I'm mostly sticking with custom building my own system than bothering with the looming number of consoles within a single gen that we're starting to see. It started out yonks ago as a box that was designed to play only games, now we're seeing multiple boxes trying to emulate the other platform, but falling short on it here and there.

Scorpio could be up-to twice as capable in many aspects compared to the Playstation 4 Pro.

However... I don't think Sony is all that concerned, they have the momentum, they have a stronger brand image, Scorpio isn't likely to erode the lead that they currently have.

There's no point of the PS4 pro to exsist. The people who want more power, would ignore the pro, and skip to ps4k. That's where the canblizing would start. Than people would be acustom for the middle upgrade, to be abandoned fast. So people would wait it out. Causing sales issues, and brand hate. This is what happened to Street Fighter.

If that were the case... AMD and nVidia would never have mid-range GPU's. Everyone would just jump on the high-end cards.
Intel would never need to release a dozen CPU's, AMD either.

Not everyone can justify or afford spending an extra $100-$200 on "faster" hardware, which is why most segments have multiple tiers of price-points.

Besides, isn't the regular PS4 outselling the PS4 Pro? (Correct me if I am wrong, haven't checked any numbers recently.)

Skiping one gives me a year time worth of saving up. And being smart. Street fighter 4 comes out. I'll wait 2 years. I'll only pay 60$, and get everything.
