Reminds me a lot of the Steambox scenario, too many choices for hardware can put off some people and confuse others. If it was defintiely going that way, I wouldn't feel the need to bother with anything outside of building my own setup every 4-5 years. 

Yeah, it's also another step away from the console world's supposed main motto; "simple gaming", or at least more simple than PC. PC gaming is becoming more streamlined while console gaming is becoming more finicky and bombarded with forced updates, patches, paid services and useless companion apps and DLC.
