- I'm starting to hate this constant flinging of the term "nostalgia" in part because it implies something isn't good enough to stand on its own merit which is simply not true in BoW's case, and partly because people don't seem to realize the irony that while they try to downplay a product because of "nostalgia" they don't realize that the fact that the very term indicates that the product has SO much value and quality to some that they actually prefer a past product/brand over a modern day one..

- Are you sure you're talking about the same game I've played for 20 hours when speaking of its combat? It's actually quite elaborate in that you can take on enemies in a huge variety of creative ways and implement a number of different strategies using endless objects at your disposal, which is almost unheard of of many games of the modern era. There is also a great deal of varience in rewarding good technique vs bad - meaning if you implement a smart tactic in a battle you can easily and efficiently run over a mob of opponents, whereas go in swinging stupidly with little to no strategy and you'll get annihilated by some surprisingly smart and versatile ai in that same scenario.. The frequent weapon/shield breaking is an annoyance and admitedly probably occurs a bit too frequently, but it's part of the challenge of the game - and you get showered with so many weapons anyway that it rarely seems to matter.

- Of course the game has it's flaws - virtually every game that ever existed has SOME flaws. But I think the key argument is (or at least I'D argue that - its flaws are minor compared to the vast majority of games (that I've experienced in my 25 years of gaming at leaast), or that it's so fun and so well made that its strengths far outweigh its flaws. There's also a certain subjectivity when it comes to "flaws" as is more or less true in most forms of art/entertainment..

- Zelda more than any game has a homongus amount of nostalgia, BotW can stand on its own as it is a great game but its undeniable it gets overly praized, had this been a new IP the atention and perfect scores wouldn't be like this. Also ppl wouldn't be jumping to defend anything on the game on every turn, the ammount of ppl trying to justify the durability system that has you stoping the flow of the game every 10 minutes to fidle trough bland and clustered menus is something extraordinary for example.

- The core mechanics of the combat are super simple and pretty much the same as it has been on Zelda games for ages, attack week spot till the end of times, you can approach it in different ways but you are still gona be doing the basics no matter what lots and lots of times. And the enemies are just as simple as theyve been in any other Zelda game as well, they hit hard as fck but other than that they have super basic move sets and are beyond predictible. Also combat feels slow for me, but I guess most ppl don't share that opinion and that might be because I was playing Nier automata and Horizon befor epicking up Zelda wich means I was just used to those 2 games speed.

- No doubt its fun but when you are going to review a game you can't just ignore flaws, you read most of BotW reviews youd think its the only good game ever released and that its the only game you will ever need to play.

In the end, it doesn't matter. GAMERS vote what's the best game by sales. BOTW won't even come close to a fraction of the sales GTAV has. Not in this or any other lifetime. Plain and simple. They can state Zelda's greatness all they want but we all know it's BS. It's no The Last of Us and Rockstar are kings of the open world.

I think for me it's gonna be rdr2

A higher Metacritic score over another game doesn't mean immediate GOTY. Look at Uncharted last year with Overwatch. The former had a higher score than the latter, yet it didn't win GOTY. There's also many other games this year who might have a higher chance of getting it. Claiming journalists aren't real journalists just because they give the award to other game that's not Breath of the Wild is no better than calling them "fake news".

Have you played Breath of the Wild?

Wargroove!

The glorious return of advance wars, now with dragon bombers (drambers/bombagons?), what’s not to like.

It’s got my vote anyway.

By sales you say?...

I find this interesting because you bring up The Last of Us:

But the Last of Us is not among the top-10 best-selling PS3 titles:

Do you consider FIFA, Gran Turismo, and CoD/Battlefied games to be superior to The Last of Us?

I consider TLoU a far superior game to GTAV so it would be a shame if it were sales that decided game quality.

The 'nostalgia' criticism is so dumb. Nostalgia for what? Twilight Princess is barely 10 years old and we've had Skyward Sword since then. Everything that made OoT/TP the games they are has been turned on it's head.

The durability system is not immersion breaking. You shouldn't be using powerful weapons to chop trees down, you should only be using legendary weapons against bosses. It adds to the immersion. I don't think King Arthur or Aragorn used their weapons to light campfires, did they? If you want your weapons to last longer, learn how to fight.

Im gona start from the end of your post, nobody uses their weapons to light campfires or chop trees, they build tools, that you use a weapon to do that in the game is stupid to begin with, that you need to hunt for some canon foder weapon to do it cause it breaks is even worse. And ye it is imersion breaking to have to change weapons every 2 seconds and paying more atention to your weapons durability than the enemy you are fighting detracting from the action, its even more imersion breaking to have legendary weapons made of glass aparently, it also promotes a kind of gameplay most survival horror games do where you hoard the best gear never realy wanting to use them and once you get to the last boss you have so much shit you shouldve used but just kept hoarding that you just demolish the boss. And a sword is not suposed to break after a handfull of hits, its not even suposed to get dull unless it is a brass sword, the system is downright stupid and gets you fidling with menus discarding weapons and searching for new ones way more than necessary, it also creates a rather wierd scenario where you pretty much just stumble upon weapons and shields left and right, you see a chest and start clearing space on inventory cause theres an 100% chance you gona find a throve of disposable weapons and cardboard shields in there. The game could be subtitled Zelda Weapon Scavenger and it'd fit perfectly. The fact that ppl defend this system shows the length ppl will do in order to ignore any flaws in a Zelda game

Now about the nostalgia, everyone that is a gamer and is older than 15 or something around that has a massive nostalgia cloud (me included) when it comes to Zelda, we played Ocarina of Time, one of the best games ever made that inspired throngs of games that came after it, and every member of the press fits in this group, it does inflate scores and generate positivity simply because the game is called Zelda, thats undeniable.

I agree. I just have to look at like that video showing horizon vs. zelda interactions to see why I am so absorbed into this game. The video I'm talking about is the one that shows like how much physics and world interactions there are compared to horizon. Like leaving footprints in snow, grass moving when you walk through it, starting things on fire, enemies picking up bombs, other enemies, ect.

But just now, I was playing and came ridding up to a stables on my horse and pulled up short causing the horse to rear back and neigh right in front of beedle. He goes all startled, leans back and actually faalls on his butt. It's just those little things and the millions of other little things in the game that make it so immersive and enjoyable.

In horizon, the fish in teh water are basically illusions. You can swim through them, they don't react, they clip through you, they do nothing. In Zelda, they swim away from you. You can grab them. You can shoot them with a bow and they float to the top of the water. You can shoot the water with an electric arrow, or rod ect and all teh fish in a big cirlce float to the top of the water. You can throw food into the water and the fish go to the "bait". Ect. That is just talking about the fish only.

To me that is an amazing game, and GOTY, GOTG, GOAT game.

Currently playing BotW on my new Switch and I can't help but imagine this game on PC. I think the modding scene would be insane!

It certainly seems like it has potential to at least make INDIE game of the year in my book - along with Steamworld Dig 2.
