Forums - Gaming - How much does a ps4 cost Sony to make?

Tagged games:

We know Sony only want to sell the hardware at a profit. Lately it's sold at $250 in America.  I believe for black friday even lower?

Across Europe in certain countries to celebrate the launch of the Switch Sony is dropping the price to €199 for 1 day only.

Could it really cost them less then €200 to produce a 500gb ps4 slim?  Seems crazy if so considering the console is even 3 and a half years old yet.

So what do you think it costs to produce?  And how low can they go?  If PS5 doesn't release for another 3/4 years then we could see a super slim priced under $150 or maybe even less?  That would sell a lot in developing countries!

Pretty sure $150 is still too much for developed countries:/

Keep in mind the 150 for us would be much higher for them.

I'd guess somewhere around $200 (maybe a little less). That would leave a bit of profit for both Sony and retailers. I do expect an eventual super slim retailing at $200 with eventual drops to $150.

The current model I think will drop to $199.99 in 2018. Then I expect a PS4 Super Slim, PS4 Pro Slim, and PS4 Premium. PS4 Super Slim will come in at $149.99 for holiday 2019. I think the Pro Slim will be $299.99 & the Premium will be $499.99 at launch. I think in the end as SSD tech becomes cheaper than HDD GB for $, the original PS4 spec will eventually reach $99.99 in the US before being retired in 2023. Then PS5 will be released in 2024.

There is a lot of consumer brainwashing when it comes to manufacturing costs. It's in the interest of manufacturers do get consumers to perceive their hardware as great value but the factory door prices are much lower than people realise. A realistic factory door price for ps4 is probably around $80-120.

Here in the uk the Raspberry Pi is sold at £4 for the small version which is a profitable price for all concerned. This pi is made here in the UK which is expensive to manufacture goods compared to China and yet is a full uncased computer even given away on a UK newstand magazine.

It's like the Switch pro controller. Probably in the region of $3-7 to manufacture but going by many people on this forum they somehow think it would cost $40 to manufacture or more even.

Its 188,- in the netherlands in multiple stores, so if they still make a profit its dirt cheap, it should be cheaper to make then the original (non slim) ps4 because they removed the audio port and its a smaller chip and smaller box, so I was a bit suprised it launched at the same price.

Anyway, lots of people can buy a ps4 now at this price which is great

So what do you think the PS5 will offer in 2020, that makes it w orth while upgrade to the masses?

Also, how low do you think the PS4 will go before it is discontinued? Like I said, I think it will hit $99.99 due to moving to 7nm chips, and switching to m.2, which will be very cheap by 2020. I imagine the PS4 Super Slim will be about the size of the PS2 Slim with a top loader disc drive, and a 512GB m.2 SSD instead of the 2.5" HDD.

I think they are able to do 199$ and still make profit off each sale (both stores & sony).

This year you ll see 199$ price point in the holidays... and maybe a few years from now, if they do a new slimmer version, you might see 149$ price point (2019?).

I struggle to believe this.

A PS4 surely cost a lot more than $80 to make. Nothing adds up.
