Forums - Gaming - So many PS4 games have female leads

Odin Sphere has five main characters who are all playable for equal lengths of time and all have equally important contributions to the story. While the female protags outnumber the males 3:2, I would argue that you can't say there is a singular "main" character.

You could argue Velvet is the main character due to her proximity to the main Antagonist until you realize that Gwendolin is the reason Onyx turned into a big bad, Cornelius is the son of a big bad, and Ingway/Darkova only got involved because he hates Cornelius.

God Odin Sphere was a great game.

It sure was. If it weren't so repetitive after finishing the story with the first character, it would have been close to perfect. Half way through it felt like a chore.

All games I will sadly have to pass on buying. Nothing against their vision, I just do not enjoy playing as a female.

That doesn't make any sense to me. You can't play a game if it has a female protagonist?

Don't judge him. I mean, I couldn't play Starfox because I'm not an anthropomorphic space fox. Totally understandable.

Never even crossed my mind. Gender is irrelevant to me when comes to games. As long as it's good game I don't care what I play as.

The only game that has a female protagonist that I have beaten in the Tomb Raider reboot.  Every other game I have tried, I lost interest half way through.  This includes, but not limited to, Dino Crisis 2, Resident Evil 3, Final Fantasy X-2, Bayonetta 1/2, and Gravity Rush.

Hell I still have Rise of the Tomb Raider in wrapped in plastic because I have no desire to play it.  I cannot immerse myself in a game that has a female lead, and therefore takes away from the experience for me.  I have tried, does not work.

Nothing against the vision of the developer, but I have no desire to play these games no matter how good they are because I already know that I cannot enjoy myself playing as a female lead.  Nothing wrong with these games, but I will not blow my money to support them when I already know I will not be able to enjoy it as much as I should.

It is just a personal preference, nothing more.

But that doesn't make sense, because I assume that you interact with women every day. So they should be at least more relateable than somehow being able to imagine being a robot/alien/in a fantasy setting.

That does not matter, because it does not have to make sense to you.  Same goes for how it does not have to make sense to me why a male would want to immerse himself in a game that portrays him as a female.  All personal preference.

I am a male and therefore I can only become immersed in a game that I play as a male.  Race, ethnicity, etc does not matter to me, but gender does.  I have my preferences, it really is that simple.

And no matter how many more there are, people will still act like female protagonists are a new thing. They may not be as many as there are male, but the reason for that is obvious. It would be like me complaining there aren't enough male protagonists in romantic novels

As long as a character is well written, I don't care, only problem with female characters is the tendency to give them less flaws as men, or go full down the Horizon route where women are all good and the men all bad

None to crap on the OP but that's only 7 games. Think of the astronomical number of games with male leads. I mean, you're only pointing out the number of games that have a female lead because it's not a common thing. Were it so common it would be unremarkable.

This reminds me of a back & forth I had with a guy on about Uncharted 4. He was pissed because Nadine is an unstoppable force who pretty much kicks both Nate's and Sam's asses each time she meets them. This guy said he's sick of these female characters who can just beat up men all willy nilly. I told him that I do understand his frustration, however, why have I known him to play Uncharted for 10+ years now and have never heard him complain that a single treasury hunter (not a trained mercenary like Nadine) can dispatch whole armies by himself? How 'bou 'deh?

I think the goal was to include notable games not just anything.
