Forums - Nintendo - Zelda BotW: Can It Actually Score a 98/99 on Metacritic? GOAT? (Based on previews)

It will also depend on the importance of graphics for each reviewer.

I'm watching the Gamekult live preview right now, and he's saying a lot of great things about the game, but also complains about the textures and models being "fugly", an unstable framerate and the game looking too washed-out ("white filter on the screen everywhere during the day"). He's comparing it to the first Dark Soul: great game but with a bad technical part, and calls it an "almost low budget game" graphics-wise (lots of compromises to make it run on the Switch). He also had quite a bit of trouble with the controls and the Joy Cons (because of the triggers) and didn't really like playing on handheld mode ("even worse than the Vita in the hands"). Not sure how it will affect the score.

But according to him it took a lot from Shadow of the Colossus and other good bits of plenty of other games and dit it really well, so it should have a great score anyway.

All the previews I read all highlight how amazingly beautiful the game is anbd how surprisingly gorgeous some zones are, that's the first one saying otherways, I don't think is gonna be a problem at all.

There is a difference between "beautiful" and "technically impressive". He did say that the game was pretty overall, but that the graphics were pretty bad themselves. He's not the first guy to say it and it's obvious on any video anyway, we even saw some framerate dips during his stream.

He just reviewed Horizon Zero Dawn, so he obviously compared it and said that Horizon was better technically.

Pretty bad? lol What point are we reaching that we think a game like BoTW graphics are pretty bad? is getting ridiculous.

And btw, artsyle is a fundamental part of the graphics, is not something you can separate, to say this game has bad graphics is just mindblowing and probably very biased.

I find it hard to see any game ever reaching those heights again, simply because of how the landscape of reviewers have changed.

Of course you can separate it. Okami is one of the best looking games ever IMO, but you can see pixels the size of my fist on the screen. A game can look good, even with sh*tty textures, laughable in-game models and framerate dips. You can even find some pixel art games beautiful, but you can't say that they are technically impressive, do you?

Calling GK "biased" against Nintendo is ridiculous, they are pretty hardcore Nintendo fans...

98/99 hardly, but I dont see less than 95 in any case.

Even as he is not an reviewer, one of our biggest and most famous youtuber here, which loves Nintendo, shares that same sentiment, that he loved playing the demos, but that the game is technically not impressive, have lower quality textures than he would like, and was rough around the edges, but that he simply loved playing it, and he is almost a media guy, actually the guys from the indie game Jotun actually quoted his opinion together with IGN on their official trailer on the official PlayStation channel XD.

I'm fairly sure some reviewers will give some cuts on the score because it's not technically on the same level as other open world game (specially with Horizon just hitting), but they will be minor cuts, like 100s turning into 95s or such, maybe even a bit more, which are uncommon scores, like 96, 97, 98 and 99, maybe we'll be seeing a considerable amount of those, but with 100s still being quite a bunch of the total amount.

So yeah, there are people that think that way, I actually also do, I think it's beautiful but artistically, it does looks kinda bland and dated if compared to the big games we have today as The Witcher and Horizon, honestly. I don't think it's particularly a problem, but it's a point to be taken, on an objective analysis.

An objective analysis wouldn't cut 5 points for that at all, the game looks more beautiful than most games this gen even that's for the artstyle alone, is a pleasure to the eyes like few times happens, to shit about this would make little sense, specially when critics always need to have in consideration the hardware for what the game is done, this game is on a half-handheld console, it would be ridiculous to low the score because is technically not at the level of a game in a non-portable console with 5 times more power.

Metacritic needs a "Top Critics" panel like Rotten Tomatoes has in order to weed out the clickbait sites. That would give us a better representation and also may favor BotW positively.
