So the other day I was thinking how the ultimate antithesis of current open world games would be like. The opposite of the Ubisoftization of modern open world games. My first thought was: get rid of the map, get rid of the bars and meters. It wouldn't even have any complex menus for your character. That information could be replaced with visual clues on screen. For example, the amount of life left can be shown with your character dropping blood, the less HP left the more blood you lose. The durability of armor and swords can be communicated with colors: the worse state they are in, the rusty they look, with cracks etc.
No more stats! You kill a huge boss, you don their armor and it's instantly the best. Cuz it's the hardest enemy you fought yet. I also dislike the idea in games where the steel sword you start with is 100x weaker than the steel sword you finish the game with. In real word there is no such discrepancy. If a blade is sharp it kills, simple as that.
Maps can be entirely replaced with a new type of orientation device, or nothing at all like the Soulsborne games. Learn by association.
My favorite open world game of all time SotC didn't feature any map, bars to fill or any crap to collect.
