Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony's Australia pricing really is ridiculous.

Right now the only PS3 console available here is the 40gb retailing at a RRP of $AU699 (around $US640).

Games (including Sony first-party games thanks to the high loss they used to make on the console) have an RRP of $AU115-119 (around $US105).

Now the rumour is that when Sony FINALLY brings rumble to our shores in a few weeks, it will be at a cost of $AU99.95 ($US90) PER CONTROLLER!!!!

Microsoft and Nintendo screw us as well, but at least we are starting to see exchange rate-related drops from them.

Unlike Wii and 360 games, you can actually buy PS3 games from other regions that sell them for cheaper.

Soriku (Feb 10/08): In 5 years the PS3/360 will be dead.

Wouldn't have to wait so long either >.>

Region locking pisses me off majorly.

I have no idea Zealot. Well I do, profit. Not that that justifies such an insane difference.

Out of fairness I'll point out that Australia has a 10% GST, but that still doesn't bring the prices anywhere close to reasonable or comparable.

And it doesn't explain why Microsoft has made exchange rate concessions recently but Sony hasn't.

Im a handheld gamer and dont have the ps3 but like handhelds games are region free.
I live in new zealand where prices are usualy even higher then australia but i buy all my games on ebay and get them for like half what it costs here.

Oh and I would like to point out that its not only certain consoles that are expensive:

Wii : 500 nzd (around 400 usd)

xbox elite: 800 nzd (around 640 usd)

ps3 : 800 nzd ( around 640 usd)

psp: 300 nzd ( around 240 usd)

ds: 200 nzd ( around 160 usd)

Most games on each console are around 100-140 nzd ( 80-115 usd)

In general it's not a major currency.  But right now it is at historical highs against the US/Japan and some other nations, and has been for the better part of a year.

the Australian dollar is the sixth most traded currency in the world, so it is major.

2001 1 AUD = .46 US

2008 1 AUD = .90+ US

Video games aren't stupid. The people that play them are.
