I wonder if there will be games running below 720/900p in the future, something like 540/720p....

If you want graphically impressive games, you're in the wrong camp and you should've known it ten years ago. You can't blame anyone other than yourself for this situation.

While the PS4 Pro and Scorpio is enjoying 4K, I'll be here still on 720p.

1080p games looks great while upscaled to 4K in my opinion. 720p, not so much. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Fast Racing RMX are the only games I can think of that are confirmed 1080p. Breath of the Wild is 900p(that's fine), Super Mario Odyssey gameplay from Trailer is confirmed 720p, Splatoon 2 demo is 720p and we don't know what resolution ARMS is....... I'll still buy these awesome games but it's dissapointing that barely of them runs 1080p.

Yea I am aware that it's a hybrid and it's a kick-ass portable console, but I'm not sure if I'll be using handheld mode that often. I'm perfectly fine with the Switch screen being 720p too. But I just want 1080p Nintendo games(or atleast 900p) on my beautiful 4K screen....     

 

 

 

Sounds like your TV might have a cheap upscaler inside. 720p should make for perfect integer scaling on a 4K. Make sure you have any noise reduction features switched off on your set.

I doubt Nintendo will go below 720p as that was their baseline on Wii U, a less powerful system.

Yeah image treatment can be just as important as raw pixel count. 720p Wii U games like Trine 2 Director's Cut, Captain Toad, 3D World, and Splinter Cell look fine on my TV because of effective AA.

Increasing a 6.2" screen from 1280x720 to 1920x1080 shouldn't add $101 to the cost. There are Chinese phones with 1080P 6" panels, few gigs of Ram, mid-range SoC for about $110 USD.

As soon as we knew it was Tegra powered, we knew it was a 720P console. I stated that multiple times. (Even if some people on this forum refused to believe that at the time. They assumed more power than Wii U = More resolution.)

Who says that it will? Nintendo could release revised hardware later down the line, maybe something based around Volta.

There is a reason for this. When you upscale 1080P to 4k, you can quadruple the pixel count, it looks fairly clean and sharp.
When you upscale 720P to 4k, you need stretch the 720P image over 9x the pixel area, which means lots more blur.

Here is how many 720P images you need to fill a 4k resolution:


And here is how many 1080P images you need to fill a 4k image.


There is simply no side stepping that issue, you can use the best scaling algorithms, tons of post-processing... 720P will never look as sharp or as clean on a 4k screen as 1080P.

The Portable screens resolution is irrellevent. The switch can still render at 1080P even with a 720P screen.

Really? You should want 4k on a 4k screen.

That ignores the horizontal resolution.

720P to 4k is actually 9x all up.

I really wish nintendo had achieved 1080p, but still enough for me to purchase. Perhaps we could see switch 1.5 with 1080p screen and boost mode just like ps4 pro.

You could have all the flops in the world, it still wouldn't turn the Switch into a 1080P platform, it may be more efficient than other older console chip designs, but it simply doesn't make up for the sheer lack of hardware, memory and bandwidth.

They would probably just use a "smart blur" to blur the edges of geometry and call it AA though.

Not to mention... physical media.

A PC can last longer than 5 years. The PC can also be portable.

The PC also has Physical Media.

Switch and Wii U has the same resolution "capabilities" as each other. The Switch is using faster and more efficient hardware, so in theory should be able to pull off higher resolutions and framerates more often than the Wii U. But if Developers use that extra hardware headroom for better graphics (As they should), then framerates and resolution will be held back. That's life.

That's strange because your 4K tv should scale 720p way better than any 1080p tv. 720*3=2160...

Splatoon was earlier than other games Nintendo showed. But i think the real problem so far was lack of anti aliasing, not resolution.

2160p is not 720p*3... It is 9 times the resolution... I know math is difficult sometimes but atleast grab a calculator and check before posting



I mostly play RTS and Moba style games now adays as well as ALOT of benchmarking. I do play other games however such as the witcher 3 and Crysis 3, and recently Ashes of the Singularity. I love gaming on the cutting edge and refuse to accept any compromises. Proud member of the Glorious PC Gaming Master Race. Long Live SHIO!!!! 

That i was always against the idea of a hybrid. It is the worse of both world, with games that are somewhat lost between 2 philosophies.

It's the best of the handheld world for sure. Maybe not the best home, but guess what? Many people are fine with exchanging power for portability.
