What is a RPG?
Idk if I would call it an RPG but it is easily the best zombie/"end of the world" game I have ever played. The permadeath really adds a layer of tension, immersion, and excitement that other games in its genre lack. Games like Dead Rising and Days Gone have impressive zombie counts on screen, but if you die, you just respawn, so it makes it a lot less impactful.
And now we will have that awesomeness, plus online play. Gonna be gud.
So I did some further research on Dead Labs forums and found others that had the same problem I was having in the game. The solution was to unplug the console from the wall socket for 30 seconds. I don't know how it fixed it, but it did.
I hated it.
Pretty as an anus, still manages to run like crap, shoddy combat, too many enemies early on when you are woefully underpowered, can barely carry anything so you are constantly going back to your base after exploring two small buildings.
Don't get the hype for it at all, I gave up after two hours

Yea, there are a lot of flaws in this game. I like the combat though the controls are utter crap. The game runs too buggy/laggy when there's a lot of enemies on screen, even on Xbox One. There is a lot I don't like about the game I will admit, and yet it has a certain quality to it. I can't seem to put it down once I start playing.

Tha'ts kind of realistic, is it not? Early on you are supposed to be underpowered, and each encounter is supposed to be frightening. Especially the permadeath adds a layer of extra tension, where you must get away at all costs, and you are scrambling for your life. In other games you could just die, and reload, but here you really are fighting for survival at every moment. A true survival game, where you actually are afraid to die, like you should.
You'd plan to scavenge a house or two, and go back for the day to rest up. That also is somewhat realistic, especially given how full the town is of zombies, and how dangerous it is to go on those scavanging runs. You don't have to explore every house, but you need a good balance. Also you can also bring a bigger backpack, at the cost of mobility, and you can bring a car, and store things in the trunk of the car.
The permadeath possibly one of my favourite aspects of the game, how you can grow attached to a character and then you might just lose them. Also the skills that improve as you do something. Sneak around a lot, and your sneaking skill will increase. Fight hand to hand a lot, your combat skill will increase, etc. Already by deafault each character has different skill levels, and added this mechanic, you end up with different people that are good for different types of missions.
While personally for me the gameplay, grew a bit stale after a few hours and the story didn't hook me in, the game has plenty of amazing ideas and game mechanics, and definitely the next one has potential to be one of the greats.

I know it's realistic, but there is a reason most games don't aim for that, and it's because realism in games is often crap. Plus it is even more frustrating given that, if I remember correctly, zombies respawn so fast that after clearing a horde to get into a house, after a couple of minutes inside, there is another horde waiting for you on the way out

To each his own. I personally love when games attemt to strive for realism. As with GTA IV, while a technical masterpiece, many people found the game to be to be boring as it was "too" realistic and not enough "fun". I personally immensely enjoyed the more serious and realistic approach. Again depends on the person, and not everyone will enjoy the same things.
As for the hordes respawning, I don't recall that ever having bothered me, but it has been a while since I last played it. I would assume it might have something to do with technical limitations, of them not being able to have as many zombies there as they would want, so they have to respawn them. Either way, I'd like to think they'll fix that in the sequel.
I onwed the original, but after the YOSE version came out, I got so angry I never got to play. Don't want to buy the YOSE version since I had already bought the game.
I have high hopes for the sequel tho.
State of decay is an AMAZING game, with a terrible terrible buggy engine.
If State of decay can make the promise of co op true and make the game even greater and fix the fact it ran like it was being played on a atari then it could clearly be a GOTY contender.
I am personally very excited to see how State of Decay 2 turns out and I will definitely play it since I have a ton of hours on the first one on my old 360
