Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo hints at true 3DS successor

They always said that really clearly, nothing surprising.

And it's obvious they won't throw away their 60M handheld userbase because of a gamble with a $300 console. You don't just kill your most profitable market by focusing on a hybrid product with your least profitable one. That could be suicidal for the entire company. Third party developers are doing the same thing and keep developing 3DS games. So they are already thinking and working on a real "3DS2", with the same kind of price and the same market as a target.

If the Switch gamble isn't a reassuring success in the first few months or the first year, this "3DS2" will become real pretty quickly.

Why wouldn't 3DS owners buy a Switch if their favorite franchises are continued exclusively on it. Why would a next generation handheld system "kill" their handheld market?

DS owners didn't want to buy a $250 3DS, and Nintendo had to urgently reduce the price by a third (!) a few months after launch because of the low sales. Why would they buy a $300 console then?

The Switch isn't showcased and isn't priced like a handheld, so it might not fit in this market, that's all. If your product doesn't fit in what your consumers are looking for, even if your product is "next generation", it can fail. Why wouldn't PS2 owners buy a PS3? Why wouldn't Wii owners buy a Wii U?

Because casuals. They wouldn't have bought the successor console even if it was the best console ever.

Your first sentence says it all. Nobody liked the 3DS yet they all caved when it turned out that all their favorite games were exclusive on the new device. Same will happen with the Switch if Nintendo isn't stupid enough to make a separate handheld.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

So he is "thinking" about it which probably means it isn't even close to getting started on development... Yea it sounds like if the Switch flops, they will do it, if it doesn't, they probably won't.

You are underestimating the stupidity of Nintendo. I mean they practically gave birth to playstation. Thought that Wii music would be a hit. They are developing 1-2 Switch. So I think Nintendo could do something as releasing a seperate handheld alongside the Switch. I am not saying it's going to happen but I am not ruling it out either. If the Switch sales are dissapointing I see a cheap handheld with pokemon defenitly happening.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

Yes please.. would rather have this than Switch any day. I needs my StreetPass and Child Eye breaking 3D!

Does that mean the Switch won't be getting a proper pokemon game?

Again, it all depends on the success of the Switch. That was the exact same situation with the GBA-DS, they said it would be a 'third pillar' and would support both but in the end the Game Boy brand was dropped even with its legendary status.

Yes, they need to think what they'll do if Switch fails and have nothing to replace the 3DS with. Then again, this might be Kimishima only hinting the investors they haven't put all their eggs in one basket.

But I would expect Nintendo having the device just about ready on a drawing desk in case they'd need one.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

im torn on the one hand if they do make a 3ds follow up or even a Switch mini i would rather get that than the Switch itself. But if I dont get the Switch I am indirectly contributing to its possible bomb and they will most likely make the handheld anyway
