DS owners didn't want to buy a $250 3DS, and Nintendo had to urgently reduce the price by a third (!) a few months after launch because of the low sales. Why would they buy a $300 console then?

The Switch isn't showcased and isn't priced like a handheld, so it might not fit in this market, that's all. If your product doesn't fit in what your consumers are looking for, even if your product is "next generation", it can fail. Why wouldn't PS2 owners buy a PS3? Why wouldn't Wii owners buy a Wii U?

Because casuals. They wouldn't have bought the successor console even if it was the best console ever.

Your first sentence says it all. Nobody liked the 3DS yet they all caved when it turned out that all their favorite games were exclusive on the new device. Same will happen with the Switch if Nintendo isn't stupid enough to make a separate handheld.

You are underestimating the stupidity of Nintendo. I mean they practically gave birth to playstation. Thought that Wii music would be a hit. They are developing 1-2 Switch. So I think Nintendo could do something as releasing a seperate handheld alongside the Switch. I am not saying it's going to happen but I am not ruling it out either. If the Switch sales are dissapointing I see a cheap handheld with pokemon defenitly happening.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar
