Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo hints at true 3DS successor

No reason for a 3DS successor anymore. That is the Switch already.

Most likely plan B is Switch fails. Just don't get why they should say something that could make people think twice before getting a Switch with just a month from launch.

Switch is the successor to the 3DS but the "true" successor arrives in 2018 as a switch without the dock or Joycon grip for $199 or under.

This wouldn't make any sense at all. They've already merged their software divisions, no point for two systems on the market to hurt each-other.

Nintendo has to screw up horribly for Switch to fail, even if it doesn't sell well they won't dump it and release a new successor to the 3DS, they'll slash the price and remove the dock. Hold me on this - there won't be a 3DS successor during the Switch's lifetime. It honestly baffles me how people are even considering this a possibility.

They're only supporting the 3DS because they still had games in development for it and they just finishing up; besides they don't mind milking it till the end, this is why they're marketing the Switch as a home console replacement. The Switch's a hybrid, and it's replacing both systems, Nintendo realised this makes a lot of sense for their software lineup and audience.

What? Why?

They always said that really clearly, nothing surprising.

And it's obvious they won't throw away their 60M handheld userbase because of a gamble with a $300 console. You don't just kill your most profitable market by focusing on a hybrid product with your least profitable one. That could be suicidal for the entire company. Third party developers are doing the same thing and keep developing 3DS games. So they are already thinking and working on a real "3DS2", with the same kind of price and the same market as a target.

If the Switch gamble isn't a reassuring success in the first few months or the first year, this "3DS2" will become real pretty quickly.

What was the point of the Switch then?...

I wish they'd just tell us straight away if there will be 2 lines of consoles in the future or only 1.
Being in the dark about this issue is the main reason why I'm still on the fence with the Switch.

The Switch is the Wii U successor, it's always been announced like this, and they even said multiple times "The Switch is a home console, not a handheld".

The Switch is just too expensive for a handheld, it might not interest the handheld audience. The handheld audience being the main Nintendo audience, it seems obvious to have a plan B for this market if the Switch isn't well accepted. It could be another version of the Switch, without dock, less powerful with a better battery, and less expensive. That would be closer to the usual handheld product.

Why wouldn't 3DS owners buy a Switch if their favorite franchises are continued exclusively on it. Why would a next generation handheld system "kill" their handheld market?

So a Switch Mini.

If it plays the same games and its cheaper.... it doesnt seem so bad to me.

Even if it ll play the games at only the handheld switch level.

Shocking! I was right again. :P

It's a good move for Nintendo. The switch is most likely gonna bomb.
