because gaming is practically a non existent entity for the whole of Microsoft, they make their revenue AND profit from software primarily (Windows, Office programs, cloud software, etc.)
Make no mistake- the Xbox brand does not make them practically any money in comparison to their own venues. Its more of a marketing tool to keep the name Microsoft in the mind of certain age brackets

Sorry but that shows a complete lack of understanding about what the Xbox brand is about. It was never going to be a massive income for them, they have hundreds of products that have relatively tiny incomes. The Xbox is about consumer awareness and a place in the living room without which they would lose out in other more lucrative markets. If anything with Nadella's devices strategy the Xbox brand is more critical than it has ever been.

Not to mention of course that if they wanted to let the xbox brand die they simply would not have reduced the price so as to keep it competitive and in turn take the littlt hit thet did on gaming revenue. They could just let it die of a natural death - but they are not doing that. Also, it is a critical part of their device, entertainment and services strategy (including Windows 10). They can't just separate that part of it from the company that easily now.

The thing with the Xbox hardware is that it doesn't matter if it's not raking in the Billions, it helps sell Microsoft's services and locks people into Microsoft's ecosystem.
Music, Video, Skype, Xbox Live subs, Internet Explorer (Ad revenue)... It all adds up.
It's their Phone business that is on shakey ground at the moment. Microsoft isn't iterating fast or substantually enough... And they are bleeding marketshare.
Plus pretty much every service and app on Windows Phone is on Android/iOS anyway.
