"But does it though? We haven't yet seen the main culprits for slowdowns like Blackbelly Skatepark, Rainmaker, and Bomb Rush, and who knows what of the new stuff causes issues. I imagine the ink cloud could be a culprit as well as possible AI bots increasing the number of characters on a map beyond the typical 8."
The only certainty here is that like the original Splatoon, it doesn't have problems under typical circumstances.

Given the huge power gap between docked mode and handheld mode though, that leaves 2 options:
(A) 720p on both, runs smooth when docked but has slowdowns when portable
(B) Runs 720p/60fps smoothly on both, dock's power totally unused and wasted

There's also the possibility that details are improved when docked or some better AA. I dunno, hopefully they find a use for the extra power.
Maybe they'll just use it to ENSURE the game stays at 60 fps AT ALL TIMES, NO EXCEPTIONS which would be an accomplishment because of the crazy amounts of ink that can fly at times. I would be okay with that. I'm more interested in the new stuff: new powers, new hair styles, greater customization options (GIVE OCTOLINGS!!!), new single player, new mini games, new modes, new plaza (I hope people can still post stuff on it), new maps, and so on.
