Forums - Gaming - Switch's Gimmick Doesn't Target The Casual Gamer

i think it hit me when reading this article.  it isn't particually related to my thread but it got me to my conclusion,.. good read if you want to see an impression from someone kind of outside the core gaming media.

Anyways,... nintendo switch's main gimmick is the portability of console quality gaming.  let's re-state that another way.

Nintendo switch is seeking to make games that require this...

...more portable.  nintendo switch is seeking to make games that cater to those that know how to use that complicated contraption of a controller and let you take it with you.  that isn't a casual focus,.. that is a core gamer focus.  it just is.  the casuals that made the wii a success were the ones that don't like using these kind of controls in the first place.

anyways,.. the picture from the link in which i "figured it out".

What is so complicated about the controls? If it was shaped like a boomerang it would be a Playstation controller. No?

Tablet and ipod and phone gamers do not even have controls! Now that is crazy, you have to somehow just swipe on a screen to control your games.

The Switch is portable. The 3DS sold how much? The Switch has some power. The Switch has motion control. Everything that a casual gamer craves! Add in no region lock ( too late for Devils third), cheap eshop games( google play and apple crowd love cheap and free) and you got everything a casual wants.

We know casual gamers craved motion control from 2006-2008. What makes you think casual gamers still crave it today when they haven't shown any indication that they still want to game this way since the wii?

Even if some of the games are targeting casuals maybe, the device itself isn't (outside the two basic mini controllers gimmick attracting their attention). If they kill off the 3DS and get the handheld horde to buy in, Nintendo is set regardless.

As an aside, I do wonder if the switch will be seen as more 'breakable' by parents than previous handhelds.

I think they're trying (again) to have a console that's friendly to both casual gamers and seasoned gamers. Something they tried with the Wii U and failed to achieve. If the no-screen gaming concept takes off, then it just might happen. I'm not holding my breath, though. And I just want to be able to play my Nintendo IPs anyways, so I'm not invested in that aspect of it. But I wish them luck.

I don't get why you are trying to over complicate things. A lot was said prior to the switchs reveal, but one thing today is clear.

The nintendo switch is a handheld console. No gimmicks there. Its a tablet that allows you slide controllers onto it.

Look at it this way, if nintendo were to make a handheld console in 2017, which would be the successor to the 3DS with tech available to use in a handheld form factor in 2017; what you will end up with is the Switch.

They basically made a handheld with a docking station that allows you connect it to a tv and charge said handheld at the same time. Nothing more nothing less.

And the switch CANNOT handle the kinda games a traditional home console will run in 2017. No surprise there, because its not a home console to begin with.

$299 says that its a very breakable handheld.

Especially when said parent can get an amazon fire tablet for $50.

It is a core gaming device. It even looks like a portable Microsoft would make or an Nvidia tablet. If you have showed me the device a year ago and asked which company made this, I wouldn't have guessed Nintendo.

If you can't get into things like 3D Zelda, Splatoon, open world Mario (like Mario 64/Sunshine), Xenoblade, and weird/nichey Japanese games ... Switch isn't for you.

There's not going to be a ton of motion games either for it because how are you supposed to play those games on an airplane, train, or bus? How do you play multi if the second person doesn't have their own $80 Joycons? Most games are going to mandate standard controls.

And yes the Joycons have a ton of buttons on them, even in sideways mode, there's plenty of buttons for just about any game type (6 action buttons + clickable analog stick).

It is a portable system so the hardware is held back by that, but even as a portable it's like Playsation 4 of portables, it's way more powerful than any portable dedicated game sysetm before it.

Another example of people not knowing what a casual gamer is.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

You seem to know, why don't you define it exactly.

I always laugh when people think that the 160 million or whatever it was PS2 owners are hardcore gamers.

100 million of those owners if not more are casual gamers. Casual gamers are not idiots.

And the PS4/One base is majority casual gamers. Casuals rule every market, except Niche markets.
