Forums - Sony Discussion - Why does the PS3 suck so much...

Someone has probably already mentioned this.. but ..

Gran turismo 5 prologue runs at 1080p at 60 frames per sec.

So does Wipeout HD (although not released yet)

The fact is that developers is still learning the advanced hardware. Just think of the playstation 2. This is similar, only this time, they are able to do even more in due time :)

(i did skip most of the comments but couldn't really bother to read through it all XD)

Check out my game about moles ^

GT5 Prologue not true 1080p - upscaled

"GT5 prologue demo is 1280x1080p (yamauchi know than in car game the vertical resolution is the most important for the visibility) but with MSAA 2x now ! it's a very good Compromise
they also very improved the display of grills and electric wires and aliasing problems (compare electric wires in GT-HD and in this demo, it's big big gap), the texture filtering is very clean and the HDR ligthing is awesome! All this in 60fps with 16 photorealistics cars, it's impressive the show room and the pit/garage is full 1920x1080 no AA"

By me:

Made with Blender + LuxRender
"Since you can´t understand ... there is no point to taking you seriously."

How many of you would actually know or care about the difference between true HD and upscaled without people telling you anyway? haha

This thread has bad tech talk. Stop calling the Cell a GPU. It's not its a CPU. End of.

A GPU is just a specialized CPU, designed to do the kinds of math that rendering graphics needs. Nothing more.

The Cell is very good at doing the kinds of math that rendering graphics needs. In fact one of the uses for the Cell is in TVs, to render 32 or 64 video feeds all at the same time, and display realtime thumbnail videos.

In that application, the Cell is very much a GPU. It can by used to do a lot of what most GPU's do, if you choose to use it that way.

The strength about the PS3 is the processor not the GPU. The GPU is equal to the 7800GTX, no question on that. The 9800GX2 easily puts the RSX to shame but it will take a PC with a QX9770 and a 9800GX2 to outperform what the PS3 is truly capable of thanks to the CELL processor.

Yeah I agree, but nobody seems to use the CELL. It just lays there being unused. I really want to see what the cell is capable of as a gpu. The only problem I see is the small amount of ram , and low bandwidth compared to pc gpus.

Edit: But I don't agree it's that powerful. Maybe equivalent to a 8800gt single.

Laugh out freakin loud! So you go from being less than a 8400GT to close to a 8800GT, that's quite a jump my friend!

Now that is the truth.

@sc94597

Are you actually saying the Cell is equivalent to an 8800GT? Dear god...

Well I'm talking about if the cell is used as a second gpu along with rsx, maybe the outcome would be similar to a 8800gt. Oh and you tink I'm bad look at what SSJ12 thinks.

@ Therealmafoo I'm not a ps3 hater, I just like the wii more. I have a ps3 , and 360 btw.

@ Username, Why don't you go bother somebody else , you aren't worth talking to.

That would be decoding isn't it? PC CPU's have been doing it since... like forever. Only if you use special software your GPU will take the task (like nVidia's PureVideo). The Cell is specially good at what you mention because it's a very, VERY multi-threaded CPU.

Where I think the Cell would be good in the graphics department, would be geometry calculations, but it's up to question if it has any shader peformance, which has taken a lot of importance in last years. The best looking game of each console are very shader-heavy games (Uncharted, Bioshock and Mario Galaxy)

Yea, all the major processing is decoding, but I would think if Toshiba (the company most interested in this) were to do something like this with the Cell, they would use it for everything. No need in putting more hardware into the system then needed, and the Cell can fill up a frame buffer well enough to run a TV.

First off, the RSX is what, an 7800GTX or around there. The 8800GT is roughly 2X more powerful than the 7800GTX.

Secondly, I'm going to quote HappySqurriel. Read below:

"MikeB, if one Cell processor can so greatly improve the rendering of a scene in game while at the same time running the rest of the game's code why did Sony abandon their multiple Cell-processor per PS3 (in stead of a GPU) so early on in the PS3's design?

IIRC, Initially Sony planned on having 3 Cell processors in every PS3 as a way to give developers full flexability on how the performance of the system was allocated between core logic and graphical effects but abandoned that because an inexpensive GPU would outperform the entire system in rendering polygons with full effects. How would it be possible for a GPU (like the RSX) to outperform 3 Cell processors with what it is doing, and yet one (already taxed) Cell processor could boost performance of the RSX to nearly double?"

Please answer HappySqurriel's question.

1280 X 1080p is true 1080p just not in 16:9 format as neither are any 1080p movies.
