This thread has bad tech talk. Stop calling the Cell a GPU. It's not its a CPU. End of.

A GPU is just a specialized CPU, designed to do the kinds of math that rendering graphics needs. Nothing more.

The Cell is very good at doing the kinds of math that rendering graphics needs. In fact one of the uses for the Cell is in TVs, to render 32 or 64 video feeds all at the same time, and display realtime thumbnail videos.

In that application, the Cell is very much a GPU. It can by used to do a lot of what most GPU's do, if you choose to use it that way.

That would be decoding isn't it? PC CPU's have been doing it since... like forever. Only if you use special software your GPU will take the task (like nVidia's PureVideo). The Cell is specially good at what you mention because it's a very, VERY multi-threaded CPU.

Where I think the Cell would be good in the graphics department, would be geometry calculations, but it's up to question if it has any shader peformance, which has taken a lot of importance in last years. The best looking game of each console are very shader-heavy games (Uncharted, Bioshock and Mario Galaxy)
