Just another indie dev learning the hard way that it's not enough to just make a game. You also have to have to be published by Sony and lie a lot.
If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.
Just watched a gameplay vid and it doesn't look too interesting... Still, this is scary for a guy like me who wants to go indie. I guess my best choice is to make sure this doesn't happen. It might not be over for them though, no pain no gain after all.

That's very true as well. 2D platformers really don't do that well unless it's Sonic, Mario, Kirby, etc. Established franchises.
I don't understand this logic, "they didn't make money so you should buy their game".
Nobody should feel obligated or pressured into buying something they don't want, it's the developer/publisher's responsibility to make sure a game is financially successful, not consumers.
The game could be great for all I know but it wasn't a success because they didn't do enough to make the game stand out in a crowd of thousands of other similar, small indie titles.
When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

Which is no wonder, considering how fast the whole genre was flooded and turned into cheap cash-ins a few years ago. If the flagship games (namely DKC, NSMB) have become mediocre games, even the good platformers have hard time finding an audience.

Unfortunately normal.
You can't release more and more indie games each year and expect eveyone of them to be profitable. For example 40% of all the games on Steam released on 2016 (more than 4200 games), you can't expect the gamers' money to expand as much as the number of games on the market. It will most likely be even worse in 2017. One day or another, it will fail, and indie developers are or will be the first ones to seek new jobs...

This is called creative destruction. Looks like Steam is following the mobile platforms suite.

Is the game good? I haven't heard a damn thing about this game.
