Forums - Website Topics - The Moderator Thread

Do mods have the ability to see how many times a poster has posted in a certain thread? Or does an administrator? Does such a feature exist on the site?

Around the Network

So, in regards to my questioning yesterday, I just wanted to clarify that I wasn't mad or angry at any of you guys I was just more surprised/confused than anything. I'm sorry if it caused a headache!

From the forum rules - "Posts or signatures slamming a particular platform without basis - be it a specific console, macs, windows, or anything similar - will not be tolerated. This applies to specific games as well as consoles."

What constitutes "without basis"? My thread was recently locked, and I'm not entirely sure what was wrong with it. The games I mentioned in the thread clearly have a basis for being slammed. Is there some other forum rules that the thread violated? I went several weeks with a signature that "slammed" said games without being moderated. Anyway would a mod bother explaining this?

I think the issue is that you didn't get the go ahead from a mod beforehand. There's threads like this around but they're crawling with mods to make sure people stay civil.

I wasn't around for the decision so take what I say with a pinch of salt, but I see CGI posted in your thread before closing it so you're better off asking him why... unless I somehow hit the nail on the head with my response, lol. His post was;

"These topics are, generally, against the rules and are supposed to be locked. In the future, speak to a Moderator about a thread like it."

And now I'm going to quote this post because it's along the lines of what I'm going to tell you;

But here I go with my own take on it;

This seems to pretty much sum it up, in order to make such a thread which has the potential to invite a whole bunch of unnecessary flaming/trolling etc. you'd need to talk to, and receive permission from, a moderator beforehand... we'd need to know about the thread before it was made so we could take time to evaluate the possibilities and what to expect from it, is it worth having the thread, could we find a way to keep it civil without leading to dozens of moderations etc. or is it just easier to not go there...

Now, you could argue that you don't have to go through this for every forum thread, which is of course true, but if it's a thread that could be considered controversial or invite the wrong kind of responses, then it's always better to get in touch with a moderator first. I'd like to think this is why we're generally more strict when it comes to political threads.

None of that is mentioned in the forum rules though. If it is please highlight the relevant bullet points regarding thread creation for me.

Thread Creation. Thread titles and content must be descriptive and on topic. Contentless threads and those who break the following rules can and will be locked. Repeat offenders may be moderated at the discretion of the moderator.

  • Poster Above You threads, Voting threads, Elimination threads, and the like require moderator approval. If you do not have it, the thread will be locked, and if you are a repeat offender, you will be moderated. Note that an approved thread may still be locked by the Lead Moderators.
  • Thread Titles:
    • Need to accurately describe the subject content.
    • Should not use deceptive hooks to lure people in.
    • Should not be used to pose simple questions.
    • Should use full names rather than abbreviations (StarCraft instead of SC. Star Control 2 instead of SC2. Soul Calibur 3 instead of SC3. SimCity 4 instead of SC4).
    • Should use proper capitalization (no CAPS), grammar, and spelling.
    • Should not include inappropriate language. We don't restrict language usage in posts, but thread titles are a different matter. Also, letter substitution fools nobody, but strings of unpronounceable symbols are acceptable.
  • Thread Content:
    • Copy-pasting full transcriptions of articles is strictly prohibited. Instead, you may paste specific sections of the article that pertain to the subject of your thread.
    • Likewise, your thread should never only be a link to the story/article/video/etc.
    • Avoid committing plagiarism by linking the original article in your thread.
    • Providing original content or commentary is also highly encouraged.
    • Threads are only "official" if a moderator says so (to get Moderator approval, you must contact a moderator and they must be the one to approve your idea/title for an "Official" thread).
    • If two threads on a topic are created around the same time, the one with the clearest title and most constructive content will remain open, the other will be locked. Even if the latter was created first.
    • Threads should not be aimed at one user (or moderator) in particular, especially not to call them out or insult them. If you want to talk to a user, send them a wall post, or a Private Message.
    • Posts that are clearly a reply or a response to a thread should be just that, a post. Threads should not be a reply, a response, or a retaliation to another thread. Keep related discussion in the appropriate thread.
  • Moderators may, at any time, edit the content of your thread (including your thread title) if they deem it necessary to do so. If thread content is edited, please do not remove or change these edits without asking the moderator who issued them (via PM).

It's an unwritten rule but known amoung the regulars. *shrugs

They might let you do the one you intended to or a different version of it, if you ask. They might not since it's been locked already. Just PM one of the mods for the go ahead the next time you have an idea for a similar thread.

Has there ever been a moderator who was moderated a few times in their past? Like, three times, or four times, or perhaps 50 times. I'm just picking random numbers....

Carl has had quite a few moderations in the past, and is currently a mod.

Who's Carl? And has he ever been moderated for saying "generic cunt nuggets"?
