Forums - Nintendo - Hackers unlock NES Classic, upload new games via USB cable

Thaat's... actually pretty neat. It def makes the NES mini a cooler device than just sticking to the set 30 games. Being able to switch more games in and out is pretty cool, and if I had an NES mini, I'd likely hack it too.

Pointless. They should have invested in other places as there is emulator for NES. I see no point in it.

Not really. It's a plug and play emulator that you can carry around with you and easily plop into any TV. That's not something a normal emulator on mobile or PC can deliver.

It's also important to know that it is easily hackable like this at all and that Nintendo hasn't stepped up their DRM game.

Ouya.

Seriously. I won't go into detail about how to do it by the Ouya has like a dozen emulators ready to download. All you have to do is get the Roms and that's it.

My only concern is if it still connects to the internet. I haven't touched mine in months. But even if it doesn't, you can "side load" content from a PC.

I have every NES, Master System, Genesis, SNES, and N64 game on my PC. The NES Classic was the most pointless device of 2016. At one point I did this about the Galaxy Note 6 fireproof case but then I was proven otherwise.

PC GAMING: BEST GAMES. WORST CONTROLS

A mouse & keyboard are made for sending email and typing internet badassery. Not for playing video games!!!

Obviously there's a market for the NES Classic because people are buying it, so discussion about emulation being better and so on are kind of pointless in this context. If you already want to play some games via NES Classic, then it stands to reason that you'd also like to play more games via NES Classic. I think this will increase demand for the system.

If they're anything like the couple of guys I work with that managed to get one, is because they have no clue how to emulate. I just taught one how to use an emulator on his phone. Those people wouldn't know how to hack their NES Classic, anyway. A few asked me if I was getting one and I replied "There's really no point."

Also, I've barely read your post so I could totally be responding to something you never said. I'm sleepy.

you can buy retropie that is modded to look like a nes mini already, this is kinda pointless. If you are into emulation then you aren't buying the nes mini.

dude, hate to break the news to you but the VAST majority of people who casually want to play some old Nintendo games are in fact NOT bothering with looking into an emulator on a computer.

The casual market, yes even for retro gaming, wants to just jump in front of the TV with a friend and play some old Castlevania.

Emulation is nice for big retro fans, but its mega inconvenient for people who just want to jump into it quickly on the TV as it's rather inconvenient to get an emulator program and then somehow stream onto a bigger screen

A lot of people just want something they can unbox and plug into their HDMI TV in 5 seconds and try some old classics out. Its not rocket science. Make no mistake, the NES Classic is not aimed at anyone who bothers with emulation.

I do want to point out that someone like me is heavily into retro gaming and open minded about emulation, however I can easily see the value of a pack in library plug and play system. Emulation can be a pain to transfer onto a bigger television for gaming, sometimes time consuming to set up (even if only a few minutes), AND the vast majority of alternatives (like the Retron 5) do in fact have input lag even with newer TVS.

The NES Classic is pretty nice in that it has virtually no lag and is something you unbox and just, BAM, get going on your new TV

i didn't disagree with what you said.  Jail hacking a nes mini via usb cable is not exactly something the VAST majority of people are going to do.

My point is if you are into hacking into your system, why wouldn't you use an emulator instead?  Both of those would be illegal.  My point isn't that nobody wants the NES mini.

Talking about what other devices can do what is pointless, because besides needing to jump through hoops all those solitions are completely illegal. The NES Classic is the only device available that's made for what it does.

It's not illegal to use retroarch on a raspberry pi.

I'm pretty sure nobody but Nintendo is allowed to distribute Nintendo games. Maybe you playing an emulator isn't illegal per se, but the roms shouldn't be available in the first place.

Ok but that's a different story. Installing emulators is fine and running homebrew roms is also fine.

Running "real" games is a different issue, of course.

I went OH nice to... OK!

Lol obviously Nintendo and Playstation don't give a damn. Besides those games are soo old so NES-PS2 are legal to download and play.
