Wouldn't the Switch have to sell significantly more than Wii U and 3DS combined to turn anything around?

Yeah, Japan are moving to mobile gaming. It's a dead region as far as, us, gamers are concerned.

For it being dead there sure are a lot of high profile software and hardware coming from there.

Definitely Switch will give life some life to Japan market, Switch can easily be huge in Japan.

I doubt the Switch will save Japan, maybe if the switch had been more targeted towards casuals, but no.

I'm assuming this doesn't include digital sales or cellphones?

Well... the game industry is not just about consoles, you know.... Today, PC and Mobile revenues are killers compared to consoles and the Japanese market is just following the trend.
Consoles sales have been decreasing worldwide since 2010, so there´s anything surprising about the decline of the Japanese console market value.

These charts are going to look even better in 2047!

I love the "Switch will save a falling industry which lost more than 50% of its value in the last 10 years, mainly because the video game market in Japan drastically changed and went the mobile way, and no other console either home or handheld has been able to even slow that change down" comments.

It would need to sell as much as the Nintendo DS and then even more...
