Forums - Sony - No $199 Price Drop for PS4 because...

I don't think they lost something on Android because it is a free OS so they don't need to pay anything for it. That's why they use it in their TVs and smartphones I think.

I was thinking the same. Android shouldn't be costing them anything (unless there are fees somehow associated with running the OS on a TV instead of, say, a mobile device) and Google is happy to get the Google Play Store on those devices. However, I've never bought a Sony TV since the 90s, so I'm not sure if they fork the Store out of their devices or not. A true "Playstation TV" would be a really great idea. It would require some better-than-usual Sony marketing to generate a proper level of interest.

Does MS still make money from Android OS or is that patent crap over? If they still get money for it, I wonder if Google would pass that cost onto Sony etc.

Man, I remember someone created a thread at the beginning of the gen saying that the PS4 and XBO would never drop below $299. Said something about how there were no more die shrinks left, so costs to manufacture wouldn't ever drop low enough to go below that price. Some agreed, others argued. How wrong that poster was.

Fat Avatar looks familiar.. Hmmmmmmm....

I have no idea of what you speak, good sir.

Sounds like someone I would argue with.

I full expect Sony and Microsoft to go *lower* than last generation in terms of price, the Scorpio and Playstation 4 Pro shoulhid help increase the average selling price anyway and counter balance it.

Just recently though we had the Xbox One S at $250 AUD. Where-as a new 4Gb Xbox 360 was sold for $180 AUD at the same place, so we are getting there!

Yea, I did argue with him.  Tried arguing that the custom architecture of the PS3 is what was holding it back from a faster drop to sub $299, and with more off the shelf components, PS4 and XBO wouldn't see that same slow decline in price.  Wish I remembered who it was.  They may be gone for all I know.  Had the link saved in my bookmarks, but have since reinstalled Windows and don't feel like searching for it in my post history.

Thinking more about it, it may have been $249 and not $299.  Either way, still too high.  I definitely see it hitting $149 in less than two years.

I can only guess that they do, but I haven't heard about it in a long time. I remember there used to be stories about how Microsoft was making more money off of Android royalties than Windows Phone, but nothing recent to speak of. Maybe they have some kind of deal in place to ease up on the constant litigation all those companies loved to engage in half a decade ago.

Newegg already had PS4 Slim Uncharted 4 bundle for $210 this December. If the game is valued at just $11, PS4 is already $199. Next year Sony might bundle even more games, refresh the model to 1TB HDD, and permanently drop the price to $249. If we saw PS4 bundles for $210-240 from many retailers this year despite $299 MSRP of the recently launched Slim model, it wouldn't be surprising to see deals for $150-180 next holiday season when PS4 turns 4 years old. I could see the Pro deals for $300-325. The APU inside PS4 Slim is dirt cheap now, probably costing Sony $30 at this point. Next generation memory formats are GDDR5X and HBM2. 8GB GDDR5 is cheap since it's lower end technology in 2017.

I see no reason for Sony to drastically price drop the PS4 anytime soon. The goal is to make a profit while building a sustainable platform. They're doing that already without needing to take extreme measures. World-wide, they've got Microsoft beat. In North America, nothing they do will make Xbox die off, as Microsoft has the resources to match any move Sony makes. I just don't see the need.

..And I am sure the production costs in bulk for the Xbox One S allow for a $199 price tag...

Please explain to me, in detail, why iSupply (we are not even talking production costs, we are talking manufacturing costs) estimated manufacturing costs at around $310 in its detailed teardown of the XBox Slim. I'm really curious to see why you think MS can make a profit selling the product at $199.

Assuming companies still run on contracts, they are not paying the full price of individual components like most of us do. Consoles represent an steady supply of die sets which will otherwise see poor or low sales. I am saying that as someone who once dealt with a computer building company who told me if I bought around thirteen hundred chipsets for mass production of cheap computers, they'd sell them at around fifteen thousand... The actual teardown put them at around two hundred per unit. This was slightly less.

Estimates aren't exact and it will likely be cheaper to produce a year from now.

I don't think MS and Sony are opposed to taking some losses on hardware.

Of course estimates are not exact. I am reasonably experienced in the mass manufacturing industry to estimate manufacturing costs of consoles within probably 10-15% accuracy (I get lower values than iSupply, but whatever).

The ever so popular argument "it will likely be cheaper in a year" is completely false. It is true for an initial production run compared to later "routine" production runs. For example, manufacuring PS3s and X360s now is _considerably_ more expensive than it was 2-3 years ago. This is a simply law of numbers (and increasing labour costs everywhere, even and particularly in China).

As to who is opposed to losing money or not (and at $199, we are not talking about "some" losses, those are massive losses on a per unit base) is anyones guess. Sony obviously is less willing than MS, as the price of the PS4 in Europe has - after some short promotions - regularly been jacked up to full MSRP during the entire year while X1s were cheap all through the year. You will see it in the quarterly fiscal reports. My guesss is, as last year, record sales but profits will be considerably down (I think Sony even reported a small loss, not sure tho).

Of course, even if there are losses, take into account the consoles have never been a source of revenue. The Online Services are...
