Forums - Nintendo - About 3rd party games on Switch

So now that the Switch specs seem to be leaked, I see one catch phrase everywhere: 3rd parties won't bother porting their games to the Switch! Oh noes!

Yeah, but who cares? Nobody buys a Nintendo console for the 3rd party games. As you all may remember too well, the Wii U had a solid 3rd party line up at launch. What happened is that nobody gave a shit about those games. If you want 3rd party games, buy a different console because there are other places where they can shine, but not here, buddy.

3rd parties would be better off by releasing specific titles that fit the audience and the hardware that Nintendo provides. This strategy is something that Capcom has already stated to be following. Y'all may laugh about Capcom how much you want, but they are right. That's the way to success for 3rd partys.

it's not that no-one cares, it's that Nintendo is well known by now to be a repellent for 3rd party games (both hardware-wise and company), hence anyone who wants to play them obviously wants to have all the choices available and therefore buys another console

the reason the very few that exist don't sell is because either they are past-gen ports (like with WiiU) or watered down versions...

main 3rd party series that are exclusive to Nintendo, e.g. Monster Hunter 3 for Wii do well, but it's normal that companies choose the safe road and hence avoid such risks, it's up to Nintendo to change it, with good enough hardware and support, therefore I won't have to buy a Ps4 just for the 3rd parties...

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

Who cares?  Have you seen Wii U's sales?  With no 3rd party and no real interesting gimmicks to attract users, the Switch just isn't going to sell just like the Wii U, which ultimately means not only weak 3rd party support but weak Nintendo support and short console life, again.

It isn't really the successor the Wii U (or Wii U only) though. It's a portable game machine, so it's the successor to the 3DS, so it has the 3DS audience base to sell to, and over time I'm sure Nintendo will release versions of the Switch which are more battery efficient (14nm die shrink around 2018 sounds about right).

3DS owners are the main audience base for this thing.

It's being touted as primarily a home console but agree it will have some appeal as a portable.  I'd be surprised if this ends up being the 3DS replaement though.  I expect it's too pricey to fill that role; doesn't have 3DS cart compatibility; etc. etc.  Unless the Switch can retail for $199 and under, I expect Nintendo will maintain their handheld line separately.

My 8th gen collection

I bet one year before launch there'll be no 3rd partys except Lego games.

MEGADRIVE, SNES, SATURN, PS1, N64, DREAMCAST, PS2, GC, XBOX, X360, Wii, PS3, Wii U, PS4, XONE, GAME GEAR, GBP, GBA, NGAGE, GBAP, DS, PSP, 3DS, VITA.

It'll be $199.99 within a year, I don't really have much doubt about that.

The Tegra X1 Shield console was $199.99 -- but by March 2017 that will be *two years* old. Sure the Switch has some other tech like a 6-inch 720p screen and a battery to factor in, but these components are really cheap these days.
