It isn't really the successor the Wii U (or Wii U only) though. It's a portable game machine, so it's the successor to the 3DS, so it has the 3DS audience base to sell to, and over time I'm sure Nintendo will release versions of the Switch which are more battery efficient (14nm die shrink around 2018 sounds about right). 

3DS owners are the main audience base for this thing. 

It's being touted as primarily a home console but agree it will have some appeal as a portable.  I'd be surprised if this ends up being the 3DS replaement though.  I expect it's too pricey to fill that role; doesn't have 3DS cart compatibility; etc. etc.  Unless the Switch can retail for $199 and under, I expect Nintendo will maintain their handheld line separately.
