Forums - Gaming - FFXV's Sales In Japan: It Is Time For Japanese Devs To Support Switch?

It doesnt matter if it bombs in Japan as long as it sells well worldwide. This is the most westernized FF we've had ever, so I think Japan isnt the parameter for which to measure its commercial success as it is trying to appeal to another audience.

Until we get full sales numbers, everything is mere speculation. All we know so far is that it is the fastest selling FF.

Sales are lower than FFXIII in UK. Square-Enix I think massively overshipped this game.

It would be "fastest selling" perhaps only because it's the first FF game to launch simultaneously worldwide, but that is a cherry picked metric. I don't think in the long term it's going to be a huge hit in West either, probably sales below FF13 over here when it's all said and done too.

Maybe Nintendo should make consoles that don't mean a dev has to sacrifice so much to get their game running on it. Not as if it would have mattered this gen anyway. Should Square have spent time and resources getting a shit FFXV port running on Wii U to sell to it's tiny userbase? The relationship goes both ways

And if they want to ensure it's success, make games like Monster Hunter for both PS4 and Switch if you have to. Hopefully now the gap won't be so large for a few years, and releasing these Japanese games on Nintendo home consoles is viable again.

The quality of the games should also be considered. The last three FF games were pretty bad, and the new one is more westernised. Maybe those factors put people off,  like SFV releasing barebones did too. Didn't Persona 5 have it's best ever Japanese launch? It was rewarded for its quality.

Unless paid to do otherwise (TR) Square release games where they think they will sell

How about Sony makes a PS4 Pro-Vita?

“Simple minds have always confused great honesty with great rudeness.” - Sherlock Holmes, Elementary (2013).

"Did you guys expected some actual rational fact-based reasoning? ...you should already know I'm all about BS and fraudulence." - FunFan, VGchartz (2016)

why should they port it to ns when NS is not even proven to sell well?

It's a two way street, but it does look like Switch is reasonably powerful. Maybe not optimally so, but then again, does Japan even give a shit about things like 4K?

Japanese developers need to accept the cold, hard truth here. Playstation is not the future of the Japanese gaming business and if they want a future there, they better start supporting Nintendo, because they are the last, best hope there.

Come on, let's be realistic here, it's not a bomb. It's done much more than most console games ever do already. The problem is that FFXIII left a nasty taste in a lot of mouths, and it's two sequels only made things worse. It'll take time for Square to restore confidence, so this is a great start. Word of mouth will push it forward.

Also, there's a very good reason Square haven't supported Nintendo consoles; their last two systems literally wouldn't have been able to run XIII or XV, so they'd have had to greatly comprimise their creative vision just to target the Wii; which nobody would've ever bought an FF game on due to visuals and controls, or the Wii U, which never even hit 15 million globally. Supporting the PS4 and XboxOne with a combined install base of 70+ million is OBVIOUSLY the better choice than making a Wii U game. Besides, they've already said that they've shipped 5 million copies globally, so they're doing absolutely fine. It just so happens that the Japanese market favours handhelds more these days.

Yes, FF XV sales are dissapointing if compared to what the franchise usually pulls off, but the problem is not "being on PS", the problem was the 180 degree change to the battle system and fantasy system, and to a lessser degree the FF XIII damage.FF XV was unfortunely not made with Japan in mind, and when it took more iof an action approach, it meant losing a big part of its audience in japan.

If Sony wants to win them back, they need to go back to turn based, high fantasy seeting ASAP.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

This thread seems like an excuse to shit on Sony anyway. Unless paid to do otherwise (TR) Square release games where they think they will sell

Why not just wii u but tiny userbase instead? Its tiny  userbase hasn't been an obstacle for the new ip splatoon ( almost 1.7m LTD ) to be the best selling home console title of 8th gen  in Japan...

This one proud franchise used to clear 2 million in its first week without breaking a sweat there.

Only FF7 and FF8 were the only ones to ever break the 2M sales mark in the first week in Japan, just saying.

And I dont think it's Playstation that's killing the franchise but if anything, it's Square themselves.  They already shot themselves in the foot with FFXIII.  Nobody thinks the fall of the franchise has anything to do with the system it's on (well I guess maybe just you) but the company itself.

There isn't going to BE a Japanese game market if these developers use the same excuses in not support Nintendo this time.

Nintendo is the only one that can keep a strong hold for traditional gaming in Japan.

If Japanese developers think they can rely on the West forever too, they are sadly mistaken. Imagine if Dragon Quest had to depend on the West for its sales? Monster Hunter? This would be a disaster, these franchises would be dead, it would just be a matter of time.

If Switch does not succeed a lot of Japanese developers are going to be forced to go mobile-only ... and that is an ugly future.

5 million is likely massively overshipped, Square-Enix has badly damaged the brand if they shipped that many because retailers won't be suckered like that again in the future.
