Maybe Nintendo should make consoles that don't mean a dev has to sacrifice so much to get their game running on it. Not as if it would have mattered this gen anyway. Should Square have spent time and resources getting a shit FFXV port running on Wii U to sell to it's tiny userbase? The relationship goes both ways
And if they want to ensure it's success, make games like Monster Hunter for both PS4 and Switch if you have to. Hopefully now the gap won't be so large for a few years, and releasing these Japanese games on Nintendo home consoles is viable again.
The quality of the games should also be considered. The last three FF games were pretty bad, and the new one is more westernised. Maybe those factors put people off, like SFV releasing barebones did too. Didn't Persona 5 have it's best ever Japanese launch? It was rewarded for its quality.
Unless paid to do otherwise (TR) Square release games where they think they will sell
