Forums - Nintendo - Laura Kate Dale: Nintendo Switch Dock Increases Performance, Not Via Extra Hardware

That's not how it works... at all. Those games were 720p on WiiU because that's what the developers could get it to. There was no mandate from Nintendo "Make it 720p". It doesn't make any sense to have a "standard resolution". The developers will make their game and make it run at as high a resolution as it can run without performance issues.

As always resolution will be a case by case basis for each game. Nintendo will not make their developers have to adhere to a certain resolution.

More games could work at 1080p or some at 900p or even 540p, but they choose resolution that most fits with Wii U hardware and thats 720p, thats why 95% Nintendo Wii U games are 720p, they made Wii U hardware with 720p on mind.

When hardware platform is making new hardware they aiming certain resolution and they make hardware with that on mind, you can bet that over 90% of Nintendo Switch games will 1080p.

I disagree entirely. During development of a game they aim for a certain resolution. What resolution is possible on the hardware changes with the vastly different power requirements of games. Developers will make their game, and then get it running at as high a resolution as possible.

It doesn't matter what hardware you put out there, you will never maintain a singular resolution for software, without severely interfering with the development process.

And no, I don't think 90% of Nintendo Switch games will be 1080p. After a couple of years the resolution will start dropping, as always.

I definitely expecting that new Zelda be native 1080p like over 95% of Nintendo Switch games.

Ok that's definitely not happening. :P

You think that games released in say.. 2019? 2020? Will run at 1080p on a 1TFLOP machine?

720p is the bare minimum of HD and the bare minimum we would expect from a console released in 2012. By that time almost all 360/PS3 releases were native 720p. However 1080p still isn't the norm in console gaming. The jump to 1080p could negate much of the performance advantage the Switch can offer over Wii U as it requires more than 2x the proccessing power. 1080p is kind of luxury target that I think they won't mind missing as much. For example I certainly don't think the next Zelda will target native 1080p but time will tell, I don't doubt many Nintendo games will be 1080p but I don't think it'll be the 95% figure.

Yes, in 2012. norm was 720p but now actualy most of XB1/PS4 game are 1080p, and actually we getting in 4k waters. In 2017. we getting 4k resolution, so bare minimum would be to expect 1080p for platform from 2017. at least for Nintendo games. Switch in docked mode will most likely be around 3x stronger than Wii U, I definitely expecting that new Zelda be native 1080p like over 95% of Nintendo Switch games.

Well Looking at how recent Zelda U footage has frame rate issues & aswell as some visual short coming, I personally hope they opt for visual consistency+ rock solid performance over a 1080p image.

But we know that in case of Nintendo, Nintendo dont change resolution at all, 95% of Nintendo Wii U games are strictly 720p.

Nintendo never has resolution drop couple of years later, I am certain that there will not be any drop of resolution for Nintendo Switch games.

Of Course, same resolution for almost all Nintendo Switch games will be same through whole life span of Switch (just for record, I talking only about Nintendo games).

So...
BotW 720p portable
BotW 1080p docked

Good.

I fully expect to see several Nintendo games below 1080p on the Switch. We'll find out in a couple of years.

I am not saying there will not be not single Nintendo game below 1080p, but I am sure that vast majority of Nintendo Switch games will be 1080p same like vast majority of Wii U games are 720p. We will know soon enough, at January event..

No we won't xD.

I Expect most Switch games year one to be 1080p, Especially with the numerous WiiU ports/updates.

I expect we'll be getting a good amount of sub-1080p games by Nintendo 2019 and onwards.

Called it like 4 months ago after the Eurogamer leak...

It was just so obvious.

There is no way if Nintendo start with 1080p games they will levering resolution few years later, Nintendo never done something like that (they didnt done that even with Wii U) and will not do something like that with Switch. Even Sony and MS dont do that with their games, actually only who doing that is 3rd parties depending of platform.
