Forums - Nintendo - My second External for my Wii U has now died -edit- Actually all my data just vanished, save data too!

I have a couple of externals that have lasted me a number of years, though I haven't used them for games. Couple of questions for you:

How long do you have them on for a day? Whats the ventilation system around them look like? Are they stacked on top of the system? Is there at least a foot in 3 directions of open space around them and the system to allow for airflow? Are they in direct line of the Wii U fans?

All of these things will affect longevity.

Tis why I buy only physical.

That's pretty lame man. All my externals have been exemplary in their durability, the oldest being from 2008. I have had to re-download 3 different 32gb Vita cards worth of games in the last year and a half ( I took them out with the power on ), so I get the frustration.

Your lucky, this new digital age sucks!

Well, do what I did. Put on those old man britches and game like the good old days lol. If gaming goes all digital, I'm gettin' the f' out.

I bought old school. I specifically looked around for the best external for Wii U which meant 7200 rpm and usb 2.0 along with AC powered. It led me to ebay where I bought a 640 GB external. It sounds crazy but it hasn't failed me and I've had it for years.

Oh wow, I don't use external hard drives for consoles so I can't really help you out

Prefer physical over digital, but I guess you can't get all those eShop games physically..

[3DS] Winter Playtimes [Wii U]

My external I've had for... a decade? Still works great... except I used it on my WiiU and apparently it's now impossible to reformat it so I can use it on something else.

Seriously? Fuck you Nintendo!

It is behind my tv stand on a ledge. There is an inch of space around two sides and it is always plugged into the wall and Wii u. Other than unplugging it I am not sure if I can turn it off.

That might have been the problem (or contributed to it). I've been using an external HDD that I connect to my Wii U via a Y cable, and I always unplug it whenever I'm not playing a game that's digital so I don't wear it out prematurely. On the flip side, I always take my discs out of the drive if I'm playing a digital game. There's no sense in making moving parts move if you're not actually using them.

Sorry to hear.

But thank goodness we still have physical copies cause I would've lost it if I were in your position.

It took me days to re download all my stuff the last time!

So for this external I spent well over 100 dollars on a nice brand. Yet, just over a year later it now dies.

Is that it? They only last a year?

I'm using old 1.5 Tb WD for Wii U, works fine at this moment.
