Forums - Sony - UK: PS4 seen it's biggest week ever since launch

I don't know if it can really be called a victory. Profit margins must be razor thin. These prices are like practically giving them away.

PS4 hasnt peaked yet..... I think 2017 will be a bigger year.

Still... good on them, *biggest week ever in UK :)

*edit: since launch week :P

if they can keep the slim around 250 it will really go into over drive. that is the magic pricepoint.

the point is not to make money on the hardware. breaking even is a good thing on hardware. Money is made on PS+ and software.

On top of what tokilamockingbrd , don't forget that consoles used to be sold at a loss.

I disagree, they were banking on the og ps4 at $349, and at $249 they should still be banking on a slimmer much cheaper to make console.... Also at least half of them buyers are getting $49 subs to PS plus.. which is pure profit for then

because it is a short term peak. Peak is usually referred to as the number totally year for a console.

So peak early like the Wii which peaked in its 2nd full year, I believe the PS4 peaked in 2011 which was its 5th. Back when gens were 5 years the peaks was usually the 3rd year (large library built, usually 1 or 2 price drops by that point, support dead for old gen). I could see 2017 being the peak for the PS4. If the price point stays low (249). 2016 might be the peak if this holiday is gangbusters.

But Sony isn't getting retail prices for each PS4 sold. I wouldn't be shocked if they sold them to retailers at cost.

BF deals are to be 0 margin or sold at loss to either renew inventory, attract customers or thank for the sales that year.

I wouldn't be surprised if they sold at loss because Sony said multiple times that on the HW their priority is volume not profit. And retail stores have very little if any margin on console HW.
