Another factor: I loved Nintendo. I still do, but it's no secret that they abused third party developers when they were dominant. When ps1 presented itself as a viable format, a lot of companies were more than happy to jump ship and never look back.

To this day I dont think things have changed much.
Playstation still seems to be the one of the 3, that does the most for its 3rd party, and nintendo the least.
Ive said it before, Nintendo see themselves as a software company not a hardware/service one.
That means they view 3rd party more like competition, than as people that help them sell more hardware + services.
This explains why Nintendo dont do more for 3rd party.

Pretty hard to tell, Sega went the CD route and still got beaten to a pulp, even more than Nintendo. |
True. There's still something I'm in the dark about. PS1 is the reason Europe is such an important game market nowadays, so what would have happened to it if the PS1 was a failure?

yeah, but the difference is that those platforms were able to run games, not as good, but they played them, wii/wii u missied on almost 98% of the great games on ps3/360 because they couldn't even run them, and it will be the same with switch, you will NEVER see red dead redemption 2 on switch, you will NEVER see mass effect andromeda on switch, etc. |
Yet the Wii still outsold ps360. What a shame to have every third pary on board and still be outsold.

The Wii outsold ps360? Wii = 101 million units, ps360 = ~170 million units. ;)

Yeah. Those bit wars were so much more classy...

Eh I wasn't referring to "console wars" I was just referring to how different games and consoles were back then, compared to today. It was the days before online consoles, no DLC or Patches, cheat codes, unlockables and secrets everywhere!
Games felt like more of an adventure with fun secrets, and there was a lot more platformers which I love. Nowadays everything just feels different.
