Nintendo had ties to the yakuza, at least in the yamauchi days.

Yes. I thought about BAR while I was getting ready, and I remember being fairly impressed with TGO. The PS1 racinng games still posterized them, a'la Michael Jordan. I also wanted to highlight the areas where the N64 had the clear edge, but time is not my friend at the moment. Poeple on this site, almost to a fault, say N64 was teh most powerful. It was on paper, but I really don't think it's that clear cut. BAR was super fun! |
But it wasn't just that. N64 really did well with arcade racers. Hydro Thunder, Cruis'n USA, Cruis'n World and San Francisco Rush were all great on N64. Hydro Thunder in particular was well done with the expansion pak.
For about a year, the n64 was a beast. I think, according to EGM, they even won on sales. Unfortunately for them, expensive cartridges (for consumers and developers), size limitations, and being difficult to optimize killed any power advantages they had. Not to mention Sony's ability to add controller features to ps1 very quickly.

Whoa, wonder what sort of crap was going on there?

You can add thr SNES there as well, Neo Geo was leaps and bounds stronger. PS4 marked the first gen ever where the strogest console wins. |
The list grows then, thank you.

The DS outsold the PSP by 70 million units and the 3DS outsold the Vita by 50 million units (possibly even more, as it's severely overtracked on this site). The Wii outsold the PS3 by 20 million units as well. I'm surprised at your lack of knowledge. |

Nintendo's marketing strategy definitely changed over the years :p

There was another ad later on saying something like "Should you wait? Only in you want the best." It had a pic of Mario swinging bowser by the tail.
And before that, they had an ad calling Sega's blast processing "a blast of hot air".

N64 was stronger overall, but not in every way. Each had advantages over the other. PS1 could do higher resolution textures due to more texture cache and the larger storage capacity of CDs.
On the other hand, N64 had more RAM (4MB standard or 8MB with the expansion pack versus 3MB in PS1) and more modern features like trilinear filtering, perspective correct texturing, and anti-aliasing.
One of the major differentiating factors was that the PS1 hardware was a very efficient and easy to develop for, while N64 was by comparison quite convoluted and difficult to get optimal performance out of.
