No it had no games for 3 to 4 years so that part of its life span doesn't count.

What years were they?

The early years those where tough times during the console wars.

Bet with gooch_destroyer, he wins if FFX and FFX-2 will be at $40 each for the vita. I win if it dont

But it had one of the best games ever mgs4. That was enough to cover those years

Something everyone on this site can agree on. Man that's very rare. I don't own a ps3 but I do agree it and all PS consoles have a long lifespan that is one thing Nintendo severely lacks and should learn from. I mean they cut Wii support like that even though it was their best console. Now they are doing it with their Wii u. Even if the console is not all that it should get support other wise Nintendo consoles will continue to go downhill each gen. Although Nintendo are better at the long game regarding their handhelds. This longevity is one factor that everyone ignores while talking about a console's success

What exactly does Sony do in terms of games? Two years ago, last year and this year? What about next year? Other than not shutting down psn and still giving games for ps+?

http://www.metacritic.com/browse/games/release-date/new-releases/ps3/date

List is not comprehensive but you get the point

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2016/11/15/playstation-store-10th-anniversary-sale/

And here, you can see Sony not supporting the PS3 by including the PS3 in the PSN 10 year anniversary sale.

You could also see how Sony doesn't support PS3 by them not taking the time to charge people for online multiplayer, or how they don't support the PS3 by handing out games to + subscribers. *scratches head*

Im not sure how exactly you would support a 10+ year old piece of hardware that is extremely outdated, but I think they've done an excellent job. So much so that they wasted GT6 and like 3 other exclusives on it during the Ps4s launch period.

I am saying they are not *actively* supporting it. Of course 3rd party devs still release games for it and Sony doesn't shut down services but they are not releasing games for it anymore, they are keeping it "alive". How that is "excellent" when there is still money to get, I also don't know.

Don't get me wrong, it's good that Sony didn't forget about PS3 but the support after 9 or 10 years is hardly the same as in the first years.

They kept their promise--as they did with all PlayStation home consoles--but it was never up to them. It's always been up to the consumer. We kept it on the market for ten years do they kept us supplied with content for ten years.

They keep the consoles out for a decade to turn a profit. They generally release their console at a loss in order to introduce new tech. Microsoft doesnt do as much but they follow Sonys plan just because...well....its Sony.

Hmm? The 360 is also still supported? And is longer in the market.

Shane Kim said back in 07 that the 360 would follow the PS3's lifespan until Sony stopped their cycle. Havent you noticed that they havent stopped support just yet unlike their first gen? Much like they are to Apple...Microsoft is a Sony's shadow in the gaming realm. They will follow the PS4 until its dying day.

Who, what? Shadow what? In my opinion, the bc plan of MS will make the lifespan even longer, at least for the ecosystem and the games. There is no reason for MS to follow Sony's plan when it comes to PS3, at all.

The last game I got for my PS2 was persona 4 and it was a blast.

Keeping my PS3 just for persona 5 cuz I won't be waiting for that one to be on PC

(Not agreeing/disagreeing with anyone, it's just funny how history is repeating itself 10 years later)

Shane Kim

This guy was the head of the Xbox division in 07. I remember reading an article with him saying they would follow Sony. Every move Microsoft has ever made has been a response to Sony.  The Xbox 360 RROD, Fixing the clock speed of the Xbox One late  in the game, The investment in the Kinect after seeing sony create the eyetoy, Creating a project scorpio when there was no necessity for Microsoft to do it and copying Sony's ten year plan (well...eleven for Microsoft now...but they made this plan a year after Sony launched and revealed they would support the PS3 for ten years). I could go on and on. Its all they really do if you actually pay attention.

As I said..Microsoft is a shadow of their greatest competitors.

Honorable mention for Microsoft in competition with Sony:

-Not giving a damn about HD DVD's fate by when trying to use them to get people to veer way from Blu Ray and failing. Instead of putting  HD DVD in the Xbox 360 they sold it seperately and let it die while Sony took the loss for the Blu Ray and saved it.

-Microsoft creates a augmented reality to outshow Sony's VR which was in development and realizes its too expensive and ahead of its time to sell at the moment.

-Eager to take Sony's table scraps when Sony lets go of developers for their top teir studios. Rarely if ever do you hear of Sony doing the same.
