Well there is the fact that their launch isn't tied to the Holidays so if Zelda misses by only a small window, occupying the May window Nintendo has used recently every year, it won't be a massive failure.  In other cases where launch coincides with Holidays, missin by a few months would plant the game squarely in the January and February wasteland.  IF the new Mario is a true Launch title, I could see Zelda occupying that May slot for breathing room.  Though I am MORE interested on what will come in alongside those major pillars.

It does worry me that not having BotW as a launch title could seriously hurt Switch. Wii U and GCN lacked compelling killer apps at launch, and they never really recovered. Meanwhile, every Nintendo console with at least one killer launch title (NES, SNES, N64, Wii) did at least moderately well.

3D Mario should be one of those killer apps like Mario 64. Then you also got Splatoon that can potentially keep at least Japan intrigued as the original game basically kept the Wii U afloat in Japan and has one of the best legs in Japan (and possibly worldwide). Switch is a new console and I'm sure there are fans of Splatoon that will buy an improved version or a sequel. Again we'll have to see since all we're going at are rumors. I'm just not in the mind set that it's Zelda or bust. It's not just about getting off to a good start, but also staying afloat with a great lineup of games that releases over the course of the year.

Mario is what sells Nintendo stuff anyway. Anyone can get into Mario and figure out how to play it and enjoy it. Not everyone can get into Zelda and appreciate it for what it is, and way less for Metroid.

The question is, will Mario Switch have that system-selling wow factor that 64 and Galaxy had? Another 3D World isn't going to cut it. And I don't think a port of a game from 2015 (Splatoon) will be a killer app for a new system. If it's a sequel, then it could be.

Watch it be called super Mario 3D Galaxy just to troll all of us.

Super Mario 3D Bros. You read it here first. ;)

A good Mario 3D ( so not 3DW :p ) > Zelda

I'm super fine with This

A fusion of 3D World's excellent platforming challenge quality (and power up system) with Galaxy's inventiveness and the earlier 3D Mario games' openness, it would be freaking awesome imo.  So if they want to give us Super Mario 3D Galaxy or whatever, go for it :P

Nobody cares about 3D Mario. You already failing Nintendo. What a great start.

Number of 3D Mario games that have sold more than 10 million copies: 3

Number of Zelda games that have sold more than 10 million copies: 0

I'm a Zelda nut and am dissapointed with Breath of the Wild being further away, but plenty of people will be interested in a new 3D Mario at launch.

actually its 4 if counting the Mario 64 remake on DS which did over 10 million on its own.

Even if we go by entries that have sold over 5 million

3D Mario-7/7

3D Zelda-2/5

3D Mario is clearly bigger than 3D Zelda.
